102 degrees right now

Post  elliephant on 4/4/2011, 4:48 pm

I guess I made the right choice in pulling out the broccoli and cauliflower last night. Laughing

I think this is hotter than we got all summer last year. Crazy. Cold front supposed to come in tonight and only supposed to be 80 tomorrow, followed by 90, then back up to 96. When it cools off tomorrow I think I'll harvest/pull the rest of the lettuce.

Anyone else heating up quickly this "spring"?

I read the title and thought, "Boy o boy, I hope that broccoli and lettuce got yanked."

If I understand the irony of Mother Nature, she popped 100+ solely for the purpose of ending your "cool season." Now, that you either pulled everything, or it bolted on you, she will cool things back down for another few weeks.

She's just mean sometimes.

Survived another bout of near-nineties this weekend... This coming weekend is forecast to be at 90... I am losing faith that I am going to harvest any cauliflower or more than half a market sized head of broccoli... I gotta start eating some lettuce too....

Elliephant, you get any rain or was it too far north? We were under a burn ban as of last week, I am hoping we got enough to lift it.

No rain anywhere mnear here. I think we've had rain twice since September. Looks like we'll be stuck in the 90s as far as the eye can see after the nice day tomorrow. Ugh. There are some particularly ugly 98/75 days in the forecast next week that may stop my peppers from setting...unless the mylar actually helps!

Oh my goodness! I can't even imagine how hot that must be. I would die. My husband would love it though. He wants to move to the north coast of Australia!

Re: 102 degrees right now

Post  elliephant on 4/4/2011, 6:41 pm

I actually feel a little funny saying that's hot. I set up the kiddie pool this afternoon and remembered that growing up on the CA/AZ border our rule was that it had to be 100 degrees to go swimming. And I remember that if it was "only" 100 I often felt like it wasn't really warm enough! But I've learned that most of my plants do a lot better in 90 degrees than they do in 100, so that's making it feel hotter to me. It's just frustrating trying to grow peppers and tomatoes in between the freeze on Feb 4 and the onset of real heat just 2 months later.

I know exactly what you mean! Growing up in Ukiah, CA it was always too cold for me to swim if it was under 100! When I moved to Santa Rosa, CA the first several years I was there the hottest it ever got was 103 and I kept waiting for summer.....Now, with the humidity factor in SD, I am in with my A/C at 95!

It got up to 104F here in Az. I didn't have any shade cloth or anything up yet, so the toms looked a little wilted that day. None of the lettuce bolted yet. I'll need to taste some to make sure its still good. Temps going down for awhile again thank goodness!

Re: 102 degrees right now

Oh how those in West and Southern TX wish that were true. Poor souls have been in a drought for 10 years running. Thing is if they do get rain, the ground is so hard (think baked clay) unless it is a very slow rain, it has nowhere to go, so they get massive run-offs and flooding. It's so bad that when churches here in NE TX pray for rain for them, they are very specific about that request, asking for a nice 3 day slow soaking rain, not just a rain.

Yeah, during the summer there was all sorts of flooding on the Rio Grande with the hurricanes and such. But then it hasn't rained more than a couple of times (oh, and one little ice storm) since then. Probably get more rains when hurricane season starts.

Re: 102 degrees right now

Post  martha on 4/5/2011, 12:10 pm

I am humbled. Last year Massachusetts/New England was experiencing a "severe" drought. That translated to me not planting annuals and recycling unconsumed drinking water to use for the perennials. I didn't water the berry bushes, so they survived but didn't produce any berries to speak of. And I ignored my town's alternate day water ban for the tomatoes, but only for the tomatoes.

I apologize for being so provincial but when I hear about "droughts" in the Southwest, I didn't realize they were that severe.

Martha, no need to appologize, it's just a factor of living in that part of the country. They, and we, do have longer growing seasons, but have to deal with drier weather and bugs straight from a sci-fi movie.

It got to 91 today. Quite warm here for April. We have had no rain in ages. I've had to water every day. I am hoping the 20% chance in the forecast next week brings something...

Carerful what you ask for, I'm asking for a nice slow rain, just enough to lift the burn ban and a tad bit to spare. I don't like whats coming our way, in fact as soon as I can see the whole yard, my son and I are headed outside to finsish a few things before the rain hits tomorrow. Just in case.

That's a good point. Usually when it rains it pours here, but the wether men are not optimistic about our rain chances here so I assume I will need to keep watering.

I've heard our local weather man say something like this "It actually is raining right now, it's just evaporating before it hits the ground".
