Post  Mtman1849 on 4/5/2011, 7:28 pm

Ok possible light frost in NC again Frost advisory for most of NC with a frost warning for the mountains, I know most of you probably already know. Just don't want anyone to lose anything

I'm already below freezing. My thermometer says 30 as I type this! At least the winds have died down.

Thanks for giving us a heads up. Smile

affraid

Yeh, so my thermometer says it got down to 24.6° last night! Heck it's 25.5° outside right now! What the...?! It was only supposed to drop to around 29°! Mad

I don't have time to check on my babies this AM, but I'm just going to assume everyone is ok...

Do you guys live near cities, or are you more rural? Where's your nearest TV station, or do you get your info off the net or WeatherChannel?

Oh my Dizzy.....that is cold....Hope u made it through Very Happy

I'm betting all my eggs that last night was the last frost of the season for me. Will go ahead for summer plantings this weekend. I took inside sensitive container plants and heavily mulched potatoes as although it was only forecast for 36, I knew we'd get a frost and we did. Still air and clear skies. Perfect for frost formation. Left the plastic off the hoops though as Lettuce, spinach and Broccoli survive light frosts no problem.

As BBG has said before, use your weather channel / local station as a guide only. I go with a 5 degree swing for my little backyard micro-climate and get alerted to get hoops at the ready for anything forecast below 40.

However, 86 for the weekend !!!! GRRRRR

10 day forecast has daytime temps creeping into mid to upper 70's and then 80's. Now I need shade cloth to stop all my hard work from bolting. Oh well, that's spring for you.

Exactly why I asked.

When the forecasters say 35, you can hedge a little if you know what to look for. Clear skies and light winds and/or a front passing through will tend to make them miss on the high side....meaning it will likely go lower than they say on tv.

Also, if the station is in a city/larger town, and you live 25 miles outside that town, you can almost always count on being cooler at night than they say.....especially with the clear skies, etc.

Food for thought.

I agree with the 'hedge' thing. TWC said it was 36 degrees at my house this morning, but I had to SCRAPE thick frost off my car before heading to work this morning. I guess I shouldn't put much stock in the 10-Day forecast that shows nothing under 33.....

Not surprising here, because until yesterday TWC was saying rain/snow for this weekend.

But on the bright side...ROBINS! I have seen robins for the last 4 days. Local lore says that means 1 more big dump before spring.....

3 to 5 days is a 50/50 shot at best, especially in SD. Your weather snaps back and forth a lot more than ours does.

My local weather station is only about 5 miles from my house. It's always wrong, so I expected it to be cooler than they said, but there is no reason for us to be below 25° at this time of year.

as far as the weather goes I use www.weatherunderground.com I find that the forecast for my area is more accurate and in may be because backyard weather enthusiast from what ever area you live constantly upload data to this site. I used to do it until lighting last fall ran in and ruin weather station and computer insurance paid enough to replace computer but not station. It also has a lot of features to predict you own weather if you are in to that sort of thing.

Frost Again

Post  The Cynergist on 4/6/2011, 9:51 pm

We had negative numbers today and a bit of snow yesterday night and again this morning. The expected last frost date isn't 'til May 6 here.

Had a little bit of frost on the car this morning, but checked my garden and sure enough I had some of my crops sprouting. Might be because it got up to 65 today.

+1

I sowed some carrot seed yesterday and now we have snow again and the wind is howling. Tomorrow is my husband's birthday and we have often barbequed on that date but I think I'll give it a miss and cook a warming curry!

With ya on this one Old Hippie & Icemaiden! 2-4 inches of sleet/snow forecast for today, and my car is already iced over. I can handle 4 inches of snow, but even 1 inch of sleet is NASTY! If we get accumulation............ affraid

If I can slip and slide out to my carrot box, I may just pull it inside and start my Nantes in the dining room - they will have good company sitting next to my 3 trellises that were put together there during a blizzard!
