I love tulips! They are right up there with my other favorites: Iris and Daffodils. That last picture is AMAZING!!!!

<< HATES TULIPS! Crybaby Well... mostly because while my tulips and daffodils sprouted leaves only one flower came up and it's green and disfigured... while all my neighbors have beautiful flowers blooming.... They are three years old so I don't know what went wrong....

I suppose the correct thing to say is, tulips hate me! But at least I got to see your beautiful tulips.

They do here, too. The main reason is off season care, though. I don't have the time nor inclination to dig them up every fall and store them in sand just to take them back out again in the early spring. But, that with a little fertilizer boost is the way to make them happen for years and years.

So, I don't plant them, personally. But, I sure love them when I find them!

Nothing went wrong, they are doing what they have been created to do....reproduce.

Three year old tulips need to be dug in the spring (Please do not pull them up for winter, fall is the time to plant tulips, they are not like dahlias). After threeish years they should have formed more bulblets around the mother bulb. Lift the plant (those leaves without flowers make them easy to find in spring, they get a bit harder to find in fall) and either replant them right away with a bit of bonemeal or store them in a mesh bag in a "cool, dry place" until fall and replant them then.

I have no explanation for your daffodils. Those tend to come back year after year without intervention. The slugs do love color in their diet. In my garden they are the number 1 reason for "misshapen" blooms.

Both pictures taken at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Mt Vernon, Washington….which, like everything else in Western Washington, is running late this year due to wetter than normal weather.
