Forty years ago today

Post  Old Hippie on 4/9/2011, 10:47 am

my DH and I got married. I was barely 20 years old and he was turning 21. We were way too young to get married?? WHY didn't somebody stop us???

but in the words of Horton the Elephant...

"...I said what I meant and I meant what I said. An elephant's faithful, 100 per cent."

Well, let me be the first to congratulate you two. That's a major accomplishment!!

My wife and I are going on 12 and hope to say the same in another 28 years. I just don't think people today stay as committed, in general, to things. So, this is a huge testament to devotion, sacrifice, and unconditional love.

Awww! Sweet.

Here is to 20 more!

I was 18 (and NOT pregnant) and my husband 21, many did try to stop us. Fear of "I told you so" from my mom and teachers as much as "I meant what I said...." (cute) kept us together at times. I love being older with him.

Again, Congratulations and many more.

Congratulations, that's a wonderful accomplishment.

Not so seriously though: what's with that? No self-respecting hippie got married in those days!

I, too, was 18 and not pregnant (never did have kids). We'll celebrate 31 years married in June. We didn't have too many naysayers, because we were together for nearly 2 years before we married.

Boffer, you are too funny!

Are you kidding? We still had princess dreams. We didn't always wear white and put flowers in our hair instead of wearing a veil, but we did party to celebrate our love.... and to get half a dozen crock pots.

Howdy:

When Mary and I got married some 25 + years ago (neither one of us pregnant Very Happy )
We asked for a knife block with knives. We gave several of them away to others when they got married because we received more than one. I remember one we gave as a gift we forgot to take the original "To Ward and Mary" card from the package. OOPS!

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Oh no..no..not like that at all! We were leading the way for an entire generation. It was the era of free love, unshaved legs, beards, and tie-dyes. It was the first time that a 'birth control pill' meant something different than 'an aspirin squeezed tightly between your knees'. It was sit-ins, and love-ins, and share and share alike. Those were the days... Wink

Well, I've known my husband since I was 16, got married to him at 30, and been married 20 years. A lot to accomplish for someone only 29 yrs. old! Very Happy

About getting married too young, you know what Erma Bombeck said: I know I married too young. But when you're 40 and in love, who can tell you anything?

Very Happy

Post  Old Hippie on 4/9/2011, 9:18 pm

You guys are a hoot! Thanks for the wonderful wishes. I had to go to work today so that is where I have been all day.

Boffer, I know a lot of hippies didn't get married but these two did. We both had fairly traditional families so that was one thing we didn't rebel about. LOL!

And yes, there were lots of "it won't last!". Sometimes that really WAS what kept us together! That and "I will NOT be the first one to say 'Uncle!' "

It's an adventure and like those who climb Mt. Everest....You don't get to the summit without going over a few crevasses and tough spots. Somehow in retrospect the tough times you worked through just made the sweet times sweeter. And when you reach the summit you can look back and say "We made it Baby! Look how far we came!"

Thanks all.

Boffer, thanks, now I'll have that song in my head for days, kinda like that old Tom T Hall song, "That Song Is Driving Me Crazy".

OH, happy aniv, and many more. May you always say "You're Still The One" and "I've Got You Babe".

LOL! you forgot 'no bras'! Wink And we had babies at home and breast fed in public, paved the way for dads to be allowed in delivery rooms. We experimented with solar heating and earth sheltered housing and started talking about growing your own food and not throwing your garbage on the ground..........DANG!! Those were the days!!! Gotta go get out my Arlo music.

Post  Nonna.PapaVino on 4/10/2011, 5:09 pm

Yes, I was a hippie, I guess, we carved out a "homestead" from the tundra north of Fairbanks, etc. But, with all the memories, there was also the belief back then that women could not fill jobs or engage in sports traditional to men. That hurt. But I bought a motorcycle anyway. Rode that sucker across the US and to/from Texas and Oregon twice. Had a CB mike mounted in my helmet, and it was so fun to listen to the truckers' conversations while traveling. Once, crossing New Mexico, I was passing a convoy (remember those?) and heard one of the drivers alert his fellows: "Hey, that there biker's wearing a bra!"

Oh yeah! Way to go Nonna!! LOL!

Women doing men's jobs. LOL! My first job was running gas pumps at a little restaurant/truck stop in Haines Junction, Yukon. That was highly unusual in 1965. A lot of men were very uncomfortable with a teenage girl asking if she should check the oil and the tire pressure. All gas pumps were full service back then.

But even as shipper/receiver in a grocery store only twenty years ago, I had a lot of truckers try to refuse to let me unload their trucks. Even now my bosses try to refuse to let me have forklift training because I am female. It is the 21'st century guys. Get with it.

Thanks for these memories, Boff! This is not good news for my neighbors, as I will have to work hard to stifle my urge to sing and dance while finishing up my boxes - and if anyone saw my pics, there are NO FENCES! Poor neighbors.....
