Quiltbea...I have a cabbage question :)

Post  middlemamma on 4/10/2011, 5:20 pm

Of course anyone may answer...but I think Quiltbea is our in house cabbage specialist flower

I think Quiltbea you have a climate actually colder than mine? I was hoping you could tell me how much cold cabbages can tolerate. I think we will have small dips down from now through May, but we won't likely get a hard freeze again. Like we had a low of 28 earlier this past week, but our days are high 40's low 50's. I have some new cabbage seedlings in the house, just popped out this morning.

Can you give me your advice?

Jennie

Gosh, I'm not an expert, I just read a lot.

As for my own cabbages, I don't mind putting them outdoors about 5 weeks before our last frost is expected.

I actually keep my heavy row cover handy and if its going to dip down to freezing around here, I always cover mine. When they say 32 its usually cooler than predicted around here and I want to be safe.

With that said, I've never lost a cabbage seedling once its been transplanted outdoors.

I can't say how cold they can take it. Maybe someone else has the experience with them unprotected at freezing temperatures and can chime in.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thank you!

I do have hoops with plastic to cover on cold nights Smile So I should be okay then! YAY!!

I think I am about 6 weeks from my last frost date...so in about 3 weeks I will set these babies out and see about growing a cabbage!! I love cabbage but never have tried to grow it!

Thanks QB!!!!

Hey Jennie. I just checked my MG materials and my handout says cabbage is hardy down to 12°!

Jen:

Not knowing any better we overwintered almost full grown cabbage. They are again growing and one bolted Friday so I pulled it and ran it through the juicer. I don't know if I cooked it whether or not it would be too rough to eat. The juice in combination with carrot, celery, radish, ginger, spinach, kale, apple and whatever else was in the fridge was fine.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.
