Vegetarian/Vegan and Square Foot Gardening

Post  WardinWake on 4/12/2011, 5:04 pm

Howdy Vegetarian/Vegans:

Mary and I have converted to vegetarian and almost Vegan. I say "almost" as
once or twice a month I will have something that is not vegan or vegetarian. We
juice using the Hurom juicer we purchased through Hallelujah Acres.
They recommend 3 juicers, Green Star Gold or Elite, Hurom Slow Juicer
HU-100 and the Champion.

Do you juice and if so what juicer do you use and what are your favorite recipes?

I think that SFG and the Vegan/Vegetarian life "fit like a hand in a glove". You
can grow so much more in a SFG when compared to a regular row garden and
it is a whole lot more fun and a lot less work!

Mary and I will be teaching a Square Foot Gardening Class in Richmond, VA on the 26th of
April (Tuesday) at a local Church at 10:30 AM. We are being sponsored
jointly by a local Disabled American Vet group and a Vegetarian group.
The class is open to all. If you are in the area please stop by. PM or
e-mail using the link under my avatar for more info.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

Hiya Ward,

I remember a question came up last year about how many squares of carrots to grow if one were going to be juicing them. It was never answered. Do you have a clue?

ow

Howdy Boffer:

Not a clue. Currently we juice 2 pounds of carrots every other day and add various other veggies as well including ginger, spinach, kale, celery, beet tops and roots, radish, apples, and just about anything that strikes our fancy or is found in the fridge. We have planed a full 4X4 for carrots alone using 6 to 8 different varities. Friday is planting day for Nantes. One verity we planted a week to 10 days ago has just started to sprout. If we have spare square we will also plant carrots in them. We did have a few carrots live through the winter and started to regrow new tops.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

I am not vegetarian per se, but do eat meatless meals on a routine basis. SFG is a huge advantage to a vegetarian eating style because eating organically grown seasonal veggies is part of that change.
