After you buy this years compost, you can concentrate on making your own, free, compost for the rest of the years to add nutrients to the soil. The compost you get in a bag works fine, but it is all from one specific source with no diversity in nutritional content. Hommade compost will have all kinds of great stuff in it that your plants will love and reward you for!

Greetings,

Be careful what you buy at WM. They are selling bags of 'chicken compost' and 'mushroom compost' that say on the front of the bag: "Do not use as a nutritional source. This product is for amending soil."

Well, shucks, MM uses compost for the entire nutritional source. I would pass on those.

Glad to have you join us. One 4 X 4 is a great way to start. Gives you a chance to learn slowly, without stressing over too much to do at one time.

Enjoy yourself, find 5 good types of compost, your peat moss and vermiculite and you are on your way.
Just be sure to read the labels on the bags of compost, you can determine what is a better buy for your nutrients.

Enjoy, and keep us updated on your progress. By the way, we I love you pictures, so be sure to share.

Again, Welcome!

Our WM mushroom compost just warns not to use for acid loving plants and "don;t use in place of fertilizer" which I guess is ort of a roundabout way of saying compost??? But ours is definately not "real" compost as the second (?) ingredient is top soil Rolling Eyes so I am taking it back.

Yeah, composted bulky organic material like strawy horse manure, which was a traditional component of mushroom compost here, has nutrients and retains water but fertiliser is just nutrients. Spent mushroom compost provides water retaining bulk for roots to grow into but little nutrients because the mushrooms erm "ate them".

Welcome welcome Richard. Yeah, you will have lots of fun and something on your plate soon that you just can't buy in shops. Or should that be stores? I'm a foreigner (English) learning the lingo. Anyway, there's lots of good folks here only too happy to help you out if you have any questions.
