Mold on MM, HELP !

Post  Tbites on 4/16/2011, 11:08 am

Good morning,

Two weeks ago when we had nice weather I built one of my boxes and started mixing my MM to fill my box... since I had so many open bags in the garage I figured I'd finish mixing everything I had and store it in bins in the garage. This morning, I open the bins to transplant some of my seedlings into small pots and find MOLD !! I'm guessing I closed the bin with too much moisture still in the mix. Luckily only one of the bins seems to have this problem. Question is...Can this be salvaged ? Is the entire bin now just really pricey waste ? pale

Can I just scrape off the top layer ? Should I just let it dry ? I've heard vinegar can help kill mold... should I spray vinegar... if I do, will it affect the quality of Mel's Mix ?

And while I'm here...I'm about to transplant these into peat pots and expose them to lights... is this what you refer to as leggy (already Shocked )

Thanks for any help.... apparently some of us need a for dummies section

If it was me I wouldn't use vinegar as I know it would not be good for my plants. I would just mix up the MM and use it. Very Happy

I agree with that also Wink . Make sure you let the air at the MM in future though.

Not sure what your seedlings are but they do look leggy.

Thank you
I'm letting the moldy batch air out in the garage, glad to hear I'm over-reacting and won't have to throw this precious mix out.

I'll try to plant the seedlings deeper into the peat pots. (crossing fingers)
