Can I use my soil?

Post  jaylene58 on 3/22/2010, 3:36 pm

I've been raised-bed gardening for at least 10 years, digging mashed leaves and other plant parts into the soil every fall, adding compost every spring. If I'm willing to deal with a few weeds (I don't usually have too many), can I use my own soil in square foot garden beds? This year, I am moving the beds to a different area of the yard so we can add a patio. In addition to having trouble finding the right grade of vermiculite, even at a garden specialty place, I'd like to start up using stuff I have around. And, I have lots and lots of really beautiful, fluffy black soil.

I don't know why you couldn't just use your own. You might want to go just a little deeper than 6" on your box though for moisture reasons.
