A riff on the chili pepper advice is spot on. If you have a square you're ready to harvest, sprinkle the ground around your veggie with cayenne pepper. Murphy Munk will learn quickly that cayenne stirred up not only makes him sneeze, it burns like.......whatever. Bet a few judicious cayenne sprinkles in various squares will convince MurphMunk to move on.

looks like i have a new mascot aint sure what i'll name him if only i could convince him ta guard my garden for me. Shocked it lives down at the bottom of the property in the swamp this is the 4th time hes been up in the back yard. first time i found him i threw him in a wheel barrow and took him back down to the swamp an dumped him back in guess he cant take a hint. Shocked as i was typing this the 'other half' came in the room i said look out in the back yard honey she was like holy....... Shocked Shocked dont let the cat or dog out.

Re: Name your mascot..

Post  boog1 on 6/10/2011, 9:24 pm

SHE spent 2 hours digin an burying eggs i saw 3. a web site says they normaly lay 10-30 eggs only 1 in 20 survive in the wild do to predators ie: skunks coons and opussoms diggin up the eggs to eat them. also said will take 60-80 days to hatch depending on the temp of the soil. so hopefully sometime tweeen 8/10 and 9/10 maybe i get some pics of the hatchlings. might b a tad bit hard ta find they wont be no bigger than a nickel. Shocked

boog1, what an excited thing to witness! But,......now what? Who can you contact to see that the eggs are protected, and allowed to hatch? This is so cool! Have you been able to figure out what kind of turtle you've been blessed with? Nonna

was mud and wet leaves from the swamp it lives in kelejan

nonna its a common snapping turtle their not on this state's endangered or protected list i'm going to talk to the county extention agent monday to get his thoughts if hes no help i plan on calling the dnr an see what they say.heres a couple of pics first was a test hole i guess mus not have liked it she was only there 15 minutes second one is the actual hole i put those rocks around it to mark it. that pile of rocks on the left side of the pic is the back side of the fire pit so no bonefires or weiner roasts this year till they hatch.

On third look Boog, I can now see the leaves and debris. Happy that is all it is.
It was the shadows of the debris that threw me.

Kelejan, I thought the shell was damaged too. Rolling Eyes Now that Boog says it is mud and leaves, I can see that.

Boog, too bad about the loss of use of your firepit for the most of the summer, but it really would be interesting to see those babies hatch. I thought it was a snapper, glad it's not in my yard, but happy you are protecting the babies.
