untreated lumber

Post  spanky22 on 4/19/2011, 5:21 pm

Well... My first question.
Where can I get untreated lumber in Cincinnati?

I was under the assumption that all the home improvement stores had treated lumber.
Maybe I'm jumping the gun on this question. I'll call HD tonight if I don't hear back from anyone.

I don't think you'll have trouble finding it. Untreated lumber is used for anything inside a house/building (to my understanding) so they should have plenty. However, we wanted 2x8's and couldn't find that size at our Home Depot. Ended up finding it at Menards, but it looked like junk. Went with nicer looking 2x10's.

I agree with Hyzleyes. You will be able to find what you need in this area at Home Depot, Lowe's, or Menard's (they just opened about a month ago in Fairfield off of 129 West and the Route 4 By-Pass). It's a true mega hardware store, even bigger than our local HD or Lowe's.

Yup! The HD has the lumber.
Now I have to calculate how much dirt goes into this box. (could get pricey for me!)
I'll hold off on the dirt for now. I can see myself buying all the dirt, then reading the book on the next day, telling me not to buy X, X, X dirt. ) Embarassed

Here is a link to the thread that references the calculator for figuring out how much of the soil (Mel's Mix as it is referred to in the book) that you need:

http://squarefoot.creatingforum.com/t5088-mel-s-mix-calculator

Click on "Mel's Mix Calculator" Enter the dimensions of your boxes in the purple cells and it will tell you how much of each component (compost, vermiculite, and peat moss) that you need. If you decide to go this route, you will be able to find coarse vermiculite at Dayton Hydroponics in Springdale. Good luck!
