pictures of first yr at SFG

Post  Errol on 4/20/2011, 11:28 am

just thought I would post some pictures of my first attempt at SFG

the above are 2ftx5ft with 5x8ft high trellis, which have tomatoe plants, pepper plants and squash

this is my 1st sfg this yr before finding this forum or buying the sfg book. I used 8 inch cedar logs and string to mark off the squares. It has broccoli, cabbage, radishes, red leaf lettuce, green onions, which I have been enjoying the lettuce, green onions, radishes already.

below is my compost bins, 1st is straw, leaves, kitchen scrapes, lime, 2nd is grass clippings, 3rd is horse manure, 4th is cow manure, also have a 20 gallon tub full of rabbit manure

below are my 2 beds of 4x4, one has flowers, one is being planted with some summer veggies

now if everything does what its suppose to and if I did all the correct things maybe I can eat !!!

Errol Very Happy

Love the TALL trellises! I've got one 7.5 foot one I'm trying this year.

Lovely! I love all the colorful flowers. I forget about flowers and by the time I remember them all the space is taken! Thanks for sharing the pics with us! I would love to have the space to do compost like that!

How do you reach the top? I'm only 5' 1" so anything over 6 ft is too tall for this shorty.

To reach the top I have a 3 ft step ladder! last year I had tomatoe plants just tied up about 5 ft. well they just kept climbing, and I just wanted to see how high the 2 tomatoe plants would grow, so I put up another piece for them to climb on and they finally reached 8 ft high. at one time the 2 plants had 28 tomatoes on them, and I was harvesting tomatoes at the same time.

Errol, Looks like your salad stuff is doing well, Laughing just need some time for those warm weather veggies to start filling the table.

Now, you be careful on that step ladder. I have a 13 inch high stool with a large platform that I use to reach the top of my 7 ft trellises. I am just not stable enough to use a step ladder.

I have to confess to having compost bin space envy after seeing your bins. All the beds look very serviceable and tidy I especially like the cedar log bed and guess the MM is first rate with those home composted manures in.
