Anyone else notice increase in $$$ vermiculite?

Post  milaneyjane on 4/21/2011, 11:45 am

Last year I was able to get a 4 cubic foot bags at Menard's for $12.50. This year the exact same product, same store was $20!!! Ouch!!! When purchasing 10 bags, that really hurts!

I have not noticed about the price of vermiculite because I have not found any med or course locally. But I have noticed the price of EVERYTHING ELSE going up; how depressing! I wish it would warm up, if I could get into the garden it would lift my spirits considerably. Very Happy

The vermiculite here was 29.99 for 4 cubic feet. I asked 6 different stores. All were charging 29.99 and one was charging 39.99. I was able to buy two bags, but had to cap it there. I am hoping that 1 bag will suffice when I build my additions in the fall.

The price of everything is on the rise.

The other day I went grocery shopping and the bill came to $120 just 6 months ago the same things would have cost me $70. Shocked

I can't wait until I'm able to get a lot of our meals from the garden. That is really going to help!

vermiculite $$$

Post  westie42 on 4/21/2011, 11:02 pm

My local little guy farm supply had not raised his price but did say he has had lots of calls about it. I explained to him what most likely is peaking the interest. Well that tells me vermiculite and probably everything else that goes into MM will soon shoot up in price due to demand alone. I may stockpile some of this stuff and make lots of compost just to beat the price GAME. If enough of us did that they would no doubt raise prices and be ready sitting on large supplies and a big grin. Would I ever love stiffing that idea.

I've heard the same thing. I just purchased 4 bags at $24.95 two days ago and the owner of the shop said that the distributor is telling them that it will be increased to $31.00 for future shipments.

hmmmm, I"ve already got 6 more beds planned for either here or at my son's house. Maybe I better stock up myself. I can shove it into the attic since it's light. Garage is full.

Right on Westie. It's like the price of food shopping goes up so more people think about growing their own and the price of garden supplies goes up unless there are several stores competing for the share of the market. Fortunately there is a big demand for DIY dabbler patio and deck makeovers and buying plants at Easter Bank Holiday so composts can be got on a "buy three at a discount price" deal.

I was thinking why are there so few Brits on the forum? I've come to the conclusion that the price of horticultural vermiculite and getting peat is like finding hens teeth now might be partly why.

Prices

Post  sbhoward on 4/22/2011, 8:29 am

Keep in mind too, that as the value of our dollar declines, it takes more of them to buy the same thing we purchased for less the previous year. If you can afford it, stock up and store those items that are ok sitting on a shelf.

If you buy a bag one year for 12.99 and the next year it costs 29.95, you have just "profited" from the difference you saved. Same goes for sugar, milk, and even cotton has increased over 100% in the past year.

I stock up and store with a lot of the products like Vermiculite, and some other items that will be ok on the shelf for a year or two. Think about watching the shelves at the end of the season for discounts you can take advantage of.

Last Fall, the Orange Box Store has Cedar Raised bed Kits (4x8x12") for 19.95 clearance. I saw those same kits on the shelve yesterday for $69.95

Coarse grade vermiculite comes from overseas and is rationed. With shipping and freight costs on the rise us manufacturers have taken on more input costs to produce the ore into the usable vermiculite you have all come to know and love. Which in return has raised our selling price and we have been left with no other choice but to roll over our freight costs to the distributors. Which is going to raise the price to the retailers and will raise the price to you in the end. It's just how things work.

If there was a domestic mine that had coarse grade vermiculite we would buy it all day long. The only mine that had the coarse grade was Libby, MT. Anybody who knows vermiculite knows you don't want that vermiculite and can't get it anyways.

So we have to buy from China, Greece and Africa. All of our finer grades come state side and the coarser grade we buy comes from China more times than none.

Have a good day ya'll!

I ran across 17 (4 cu. ft.) bags of vermiculite at the online auction site. $18 a bag! What a great price! And shipping was only......$500. Very Happy

bought vermiculite at OSH today

Post  madame meow on 8/13/2011, 4:38 pm

2 cubic foot bag- $17.99 (ouch); at least today was 'we pay the sales tax". Out here in Dublin, CA, the tax is more than 9%. HOWEVER- no "grade" was indicated on the label, so I might have got the wrong thing...Oh well.

On the brighter side- today was also the local garbage company's free compost day, so I got 6 cubic feet composted yard trimmings/food scrap waste from them for FREE. yippee! happy gardening,

Madame Meow

Vermiculite - not to worry. One of my bags was mismarked and ended up being fine, but my potatoes didn't seem to care!

Compost - YAHOO! Free Black Gold! Great Score!
