New from BC

Post  nancyb on 3/23/2010, 7:20 am

Hi all, I live in BC, Canada, and this will be my second year using SFG We loved the wonderful harvest from last year, so we want to expand this year. I have two 4x8 plots. This year I am going to put strawberrys in one 4x4 plot. I'll have to cover them with netting to keep out the birds and also deer. Love the forum, I'll be back often.

Hi ya BC. This is my first year and my head and hands are remembering the joy of sun and soil. The peas are coming along.

My husband made a chick wire cage on hinges with hook and eye closure to keep cats, raccoons and our terriers out. It works as hoped. The peas have not got tall yet but I am hoping for a fence by then.

Looking forward to reading more of you

Howdy Nancy:

1. With this being your 2nd year with your SFG what will you do differently than in your first year?
2. When you talk to other people about your garden what advantages of this type of gardening do you tell them about?
3. With your growing season shorter than say, Texas, what varieties of produce do you plant?

God Bless, Ward.

Thanks for the warm welcome, you guys.
Lav, you already have peas up? I'm impressed. I live in the mountains ,so I guess you are warmer on the coast. We are still getting -0C during the nights up here. My Dad lives in Burlington and my brother lives on Friday Harbor.

Ward, I think I am in zone 5. I am adding the new strawberries this year. Last year I put in several herbs, but nothing much came of them, but I may try again with better plants. I had green and white beans last year they were great so I'll be adding them again. I had a broccoli plant with a head the size of a dinner plate, really! It was good eating too. We can grow the cool crops best, I can't grow anything that needs heat. We got a nice potatoe crop last year, just ate the last of them in fact. I have a cold room in my basement, everything keeps well in there. I also grew half long carrots last year, they did well too.
