Raised beds for The Samaritan Women

Post  sfg4uKim on 4/27/2011, 5:24 pm

Here are the raised beds my son & a group from T. Rowe Price helped me install at The Samaritan Women.

To the left is a 4x4 on legs, behind me is a 3-tier step-up bed and in front of me is a pyramid bed which was donated by the Foundation.

Yep Furbs Smile it HAS been months in the making. Needed them to level the ground and spread mulch. Then I started my business & had a lot of hospitalizations in my family (4 members in hospital in FL, TX & MD).

I started to feel guilty Embarassed that I was holding up their planting, but when I arrived there earlier this week, I found that they had THEIR raised beds built & filled (with their own soil & compost) but NOT planted. PHEW! Rolling Eyes (all that guilt & worry for nothing LOL)

Ha-v-v, this one isn't finished either. BUT the farm helps them earn money to renovate so they can open "sooner". They sell at farmers markets, sell hanging flower pots & veggies there at the site and give the rest to shelters & families in need in the neighborhood.

LOL I asked the director when she "thinks" the work will be done and she replied, "I'm not sure, but HOPEFULLY before I die!"

hopefully before I die!!
The shelter here is coming along. It is connected to a thrift store I frequent (the best place to find glass things). They help women to move along in life. They have classes to help them find jobs etc. The shelter itself is almost done. When the construction is done I will ask again if they want a garden.

Re: Raised beds for The Samaritan Women

Post  sfg4uKim on 5/7/2011, 8:31 pm

It's a small world.

Last week when I went to the class at the library. The woman teaching the class mentioned that she uses the SPIN method (Small Plot INdividualistic http://www.spingardening.com/) I said I thought this might be great for The Samaritan Women (since they don't feel they can do all their growing via raised beds (whatever LOL). Audra, the teacher, said she had volunteered there too!

Today I held a class at my house. There were only 2 women, but one of them mentioned living in Catonsville. I mentioned installing 3 raised beds at just down the road from her. She said, "It wouldn't happen to be The Samaritan Women would it?" She is a nurse and has been helping them with some safety plans and emergency & first aid kits!

Now think about it. There are over 2.5 million people in this area, and more than one place to volunteer and I've run into TWO people who have not just HEARD about the place but have actively VOLUNTEERED at it in the last 10 days.

TSW Update - May 31st

Post  sfg4uKim on 5/31/2011, 7:29 pm

Here are picture I took today. I ran up to The Samaritan Women to make sure the Mel's Mix is retaining moisture as it is in the 90s again today. It's doing GREAT, still moist, but I watered anyway since I only get up there once a week.

Here's an overview of the 3 beds:

Here are the first Tigger Melons:
