How Much Materials Do I Need To Start?

Post  fndrbndr on 4/28/2011, 8:43 am

First time gardener and composter here. I have my bin built and ready to go.

Just curious...should I start composting when I have a "full" bin's worth of compost materials, or can I start adding things as I get them, a little at a time?

Just wondering what to do with the egg shells, fruit & vegetable peelings, etc (kitchen-generated green stuff) while I'm waiting for a full bin's worth of material. Should I just collect them in a container and wait, or throw them in the compost bin?

Thx!

to the forum! I just throw it all in the bin for collection. All kitchen scraps that are not meat and fat and huge chunks of cheese go into my pile.
I would suggest that using the search feature and reading a thread COMPOSTING 101 would give you a lot of good info.

You can just add it as you go. I started my first bin this year too. I went to the grocery store and asked them to keep the old produce for me. That's really helped me to get it full fast.
