Hello from central Arkansas!

Post  claramaybe on 5/1/2011, 3:13 pm

Hi everyone!
I'm totally new to square foot gardening. I'm gonna give it a shot!
Any start up advice would be appreciated.
The hubs built me a 8'X4' table garden for mother's day.
As soon as the rain is over I'll start filling it up.

Hello from central Arkansas!

Post  sherryeo on 5/1/2011, 3:28 pm

Hi claramaybe! to the forum and to sfgardening! It's my first time for sfgs, too and I've found everybody so helpful here on the forum. They're a fun-loving group who like to help with sfg questions and advice. They can be really funny at times, too, so it helps to have a good sense of humor!

Please post photos as soon as you can of your new gardening efforts and let us know how things are going! Post questions/concerns/insecurities - there are always many who'll reply and try to help! Check our your regional forum, too, when you get the chance. It's great for getting specific information pertinent to your own locale from other gardeners in your area.

I think you'll love sfgardening and the forum! I started with 2 boxes - Mel advises to "start small." Do you have Mel's "All New Square Foot Gardening" book? If not, try to get it because it's really helpful and is something you'll consult over and over. I'm already yearning for more boxes and hope to add some for a fall garden. Happy sfgardening! Very Happy

Claramaybe is my friend. We have many interests in common. We both have wiener dogs, fish ponds, love to garden. I even named a frizzle chick I hatched and named it Izzy in honor of her wiener dog. Let me know when you want me to mail Izzy Poo for your new SFG. I have bunches!!!!

Claramaybe

Do you have all of the ingredients for your Mel's Mix? If you need help finding vermiculite (sometimes a little difficult to do) we have a data base of sources listed by state. VERMICULITE DATA BASE To view the sources that have been located, click on the US DB button. To enter information about a source you found, but we don't have listed, click on the US FORM button.

Please, Please, Please post pictures of your 4 X 8 table garden as soon as it is filled and planted. Do you have pictures of its contruction? Lots of us want details. The more information we have, the better it is for our members. I think a lot more people would enjoy table tops if they felt confident about building them.

I have 4X4 Table Tops and absolutely love them.

We are so glad to have you join us. Keep us updated on your progress.

glad you\'re here glad you\'re here glad you\'re here

It's so good to have you.

You have already received some great advice here. I will just add to the chorus when I say the number one piece of advice is to get the All New SFG book and read it before you go any further. It will be much easier on you.

My other tips are related to making Mel's Mix:

• Peat Moss in compressed bales is actually twice the volume listed on the package. If it says 3cu.ft. it is actually 6 cu.ft. when fluffed up.
• Moisten the peat moss before you mix it into the Mel's Mix. Peat moss tends to repel water until it is moistened the first time. Warm water works best for this.
• READ THE LABELS ON YOUR COMPOST BAGS. You want your bags of compost to be as pure as possible. Some good ones are cow, horse, and chicken manures; mushroom compost and worm castings. Make sure that the bags are NOT 50%+ peat or mulch. Especially in the case of peat, those fillers will throw off your Mel's Mix.

I just wanted to chime in and say as everyone else has. We also have regional forums here so you can get a bit more "localized" info and help, be sure to check them out.

I watched yesterday's rain on the radar, split and go around us, well most of it not all of it, and head your way, I too hope you are not too wet.

Thanks everyone. The book is on my shopping list for tomorrow.
Spanky, we have lots of Izzy poo here but I don't think mine would do the garden much good!

Welcome aboard from just up the swamp in STL.

My best advice to you would be to grab a copy of the book in the banner at the top of the page. That's 90% of the advice you will ever need. And, it will help you understand what we say and why we say it.

You have found yourself a great community. I hope you get involved, and I hope I see you around soon.
