Hardening off in the wind?

Post  Smartchick on 5/4/2011, 11:36 am

Ok, so how does one harden off when the normal winds are 25-30 mph? I took my tomatoes out yesterday for an hour (in the shade) when it was mostly calm and then brought them back in. Now today a couple of them are kind of droopy. I was going to put them out for a couple of hours today but we have 25 mph winds. I rearranged my plants under the flourescent light this morning so they could be back right under the light hoping to perk them up (I had kind of moved them to the side a bit to make room for some newer plants. Not sure what to do. Any advice?

They are pretty nice sized plants. I'm hoping to get them into the garden this weekend if I can. I do have some backup plants that are smaller but I was hoping to be able to bury these nice and deep.

Wind will dry out your seedlings in a hurry, so water them and bring them inside to recuperate.
Usually a day of rest out of the wind will bring them back just fine.

Another day, put them out between other plants, maybe your rose bushes or other perennial bushes so they don't get the brunt of wind. If you don't have other plantings, how about between 2 kitchen chairs on their sides. A partially shady spot is ideal for a couple of days.

Good luck.
