I think I messed my peas up

Post  retired member 2 on 5/5/2011, 4:23 pm

When I planted my Sugar Snap Peas, I mis-read the packet and thought they were a bush type of plant. Last night I re-read itand they are the kind that need a trellis as they get 6 to 8 feet tall! I just planted them straight down the bed (doesn't ahve a grid on it) rather thickly. They are about a foot tall and blooming. Will they just sprawl everywhere or should I pull them up?

Can you stick something in there for them to climb? I wouldn't pull them up...you are on the home stretch now! Find something for them to climb and fast! Smile

clb, when you say you planted the peas straight down the bed......

Are they on one side or are they in the middle or did you plant the whole bed with peas?

DO NOT PULL THOSE PEAS!

Can you place a trellis near them? They will latch on to just about anything, teepee type, fan trellis, strings, netting, what have you.

If you let them continue to sprawl, they will be really difficult to harvest. Those tendrils can make the plants turn into a mat of vines, leaves, and peas if left alone. You can still prop them up and direct them to whatever trellis you can manage.

They are growing in a thick mat down the center of the bed. The sides are just soil. maybe I willthink up some kind of support for them.

Regular old tree branches will work in a pinch. They climb poles as well as they climb pretty trellises. Defcon 4 warning.....we need supports people!

I would stick a post in the 4 corners of the mat of peas and use string to make a horizontal line running around from each pole to the next one, like a ring fence. You can have as many string lines round the poles as will fit. If you like spoil them for support with a wwwww line between the horizontal lines

trying to draw it below Very Happy one side of the 4 sides

Thanks guys. Barkie, I think I geddit. I just threw away a bunch of tree trimmings. Sure wish I had those to just stick in the beds.

Nods. I wish I had a dollar for everything I threw away then realised I could have used.
Mind you I'd have had to spend those dollars to buy a bigger house and garden with a shed to store all of that stuff Sad
