Stupid carrot tricks

I went to pick a carrot (Nantes, I think) and saw that in my 5" of soil it had pushed itself up about 3 inches rather than stop growing or making a right angle turn! LOL. I neglected to take a pic while it was in the garden but here is one of the 9" in 5" soil carrot:
