SFG and special needs clients

Post  Dadoo on 5/9/2011, 3:16 pm

It should be exciting at the Clearbrook "1,2,3 Gardening Club' this Friday.

I came into possession of a 4X4 wood frame and will be donating it to the "123 Garden Club" at the Clearbrook Center.

Yes, '1,2,3 Garden Club' is the name (also the club cheer) of our club. The mobile clients will help in setting up the weed barrier, frame and adding the MM into the frame. I've already added the grid and prefabbed the trellis for easy installation. So, if everything goes well, we will have a garden set up in about 30 minutes for the club to enjoy.

As most of the clients attend the center for job and life skills training, SFG fits well into this structure and allows interested clients and employees an opportunity to learn a skill in their free time.

It has been good to see clients become interested and contribute to the club despite their issues. I.e.: Down's Syndrome, autism...

In the past weeks we have planted seed in peat pods, started growing potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes in bags, learned about weeds, fruits, veggies and other fun things. The club has high expectations about planting our starts in the next few weeks, weather permitting.

Everyone has an opportunity to add to the team and sometimes that's all that is needed to be a good team... An opportunity.

Daddo, this sounds like a great project for special needs clients.

Hope everything goes well and they enjoy the experience.

Re: SFG and special needs clients

That is so exciting! I had a lady stop by my yard one day, asking about my SFG. She works with individuals in a group home who have various special needs and was so excited to see a type of garden that would be easy for them to put into practice there.

All the best to you and your Gardening Club. Looking forward to hearing updates.
