How many hours of sun per day?

Post  ferhoodled on 5/10/2011, 12:28 pm

I think I might just be the dumbest gardener ever. I just got my garden fully planted and thought, "Hmmm... I wonder how many hours of sun this thing gets?" I timed it yesterday and found that it only gets 5 hours of sun per day. Is my garden doomed? Should I sneak into the neighbor's yard tonight and cut down their huge oak tree while they sleep??? Embarassed

You are not the first to thing of cutting down a neighbor's tree, or at least the top of it anyway. I'd get a good 2-3 more hours of sun in the back if the darn thing wasn't so tall.

The tree is beautiful and I am a tree hugger, so I don't really wish it any ill will, haha. I just wish I had thought about it before I planted. It will be an interesting experiment. I have one garden that gets sun all day and I've planted the same type of tomato in each garden. If I were energetic I might weigh the tomatoes from each garden to see which one gets the highest yield...

Ferhoodled,

Did you happen to put a bottom on your box, and could you move it to an area with more sun? I know this is a lot of work, just a thought.

Of course, you can just try what you have this year as is, then at the end of the season, decide if you need more sun for the veggies you grow. It would be nice to know the difference in the size and weight of harvest from each bed.

Of course you could plan to grow veggies that don't require quite as much sun as tomatoes in the less sunny bed.

If you can't move your bed to a better spot then how about wrapping some plywood with thick foil and aiming it at your garden so the sun's later rays can bounce on your bed when the shade approaches. I've read somewhere that such a thing works and gives the plants the additional sunlight they need Also in the experiment the foil worked better than a large mirror.

That's 5 hours now... but the days are still getting longer. Maybe you'll get enough daylight, if not enough direct sunlight, to make it okay.

How big is the SFG? Can you devote all of it to cooler season leafy plants that like some shade? Part sun is 4-6 hours. You fall right in that. Lettuces, spinaches, chards, etc would likely do very well. Maybe radishes and carrots?

Then, you can scout out another location for a summer lovers box to house tomatoes, beans, etc.

It could be worse. You could be like my mom's neighbors. They spent boo koo bucks on their garden. Poured endless hours into amending soils. Installed irrigation. Got one season out of it, and my stepfather decided the fast growing Maple tree needed to go right next to it...on the southwest side. They went from full sun to total shade after 2 years. And, of course, the roots from the tree made a bee line for their premium soil and abundant water. It pretty much ruined the relationship.

I tried to tell them he is just stupid, but they were so ticked off they couldn't believe he didn't do it on purpose. Just shameful.

The garden is 12' x 4' and is just on top of weed cloth and a layer of cardboard. We won't be moving it this year, but sweet husband said he will do it for me next year. I love the idea of putting something reflective up to give the garden more sun. Kinda like those things people used to use to get a better tan!
I have some cool weather things in that garden (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, radishes, lettuce) so I'm glad to hear that all is not lost. Very Happy

BBG, that's terrible for your mom's neighbors... Did they ever seek revenge? I'm thinking some bamboo along the fence line might do the trick! I have a horrible, mean neighbor (not the ones with the beautiful oak tree) and I often dream of some of the sneaky things I could do to irritate him. I've thought of planting pumpkin vines on the fence so they will invade his perfect yard or painting just one plank of my picket fence on his side a beautiful combination of chartreuse and magenta. Haven't done any of them yet, but it's fun to dream. Twisted Evil

Where do you buy this kind of bamboo that you could grow along a fence line?

I don't like my neighbors and their dog may meet an early grave if he steps foot in my SFG again this year...so to save them and their dog this would be a good win-win! The fence is theirs, but it is compromised in many places and their dogs slip right over and doo their business in my yard and then they walk through my garden beds.

So where do you get it?

Would raspberry and blackberry canes work if allowed to make a jungle. At least you could get some benefit from them. Although all can be pretty invasive.

Nothing is more invasive than bamboo! Unless you want your backyard to look like a jungle... don't put bamboo there.

As a responsible dog owner, I'm appalled at your neighbor's lack of concern or control over their animals. Do you have specific spots where you know the dogs are coming under the fence?? Could you spray the opening with the stuff used to keep dogs off furniture? They don't like the smell. Do they go home the same way... as in back under the fence... or do they go around? We had a neighbor "at camp" who let his dalmatian run loose all summer. It would come to visit and leave "presents" on our beach. One time I got sick of cleaning it up and decided to send a "message" home with the dog. The dog was just doing it's thing... so other than shoo-ing it along I didn't bother the dog. Instead, I put his fresh "stuff" in a ziplock bag and tied it to his collar and sent him home with it. BOY, was that guy MAD. He had no way of knowing who did it... but it made a point. LOL I don't know that it solved anything, but it might where you live so close and you could do it all the time. LOL Either that.... or collect it all and deliver it to their gardens or mailbox when they're not home. You could put a note on it... "Your dogs forgot to take this home with them."

Yes, I know... I'm bad. Bad to the bone.

I don't know where to get the bamboo. I'm just in the dreaming and planning stage at this point but I always think that if the mean neighbor does just one more nasty thing that one of my evil plans will be carried out (insert evil laugh here). Of course I am a wimp and have been chickening out on having my revenge for about 8 years now.

Tril, that is hilarious!!!

You could also plant mint or catnip.... that stuff spreads like the plague. It would be even funnier if they have cats.
