Thanks for the reminder!

Here are a couple of current pics:

I had to put it in a bowl as it's starting to get a little squishy...

It's got 3 or 4 squiggly sprouts just under the skin that have not broken through yet. There are a lot more sprouts that are appearing all over the tomato. I'll try and remember to post regular updates in this thread.

We should give it a name!

Is the skin too tough for the sprouts to break through? Tomato skin can be hard to slice through.

Yes, I do believe it deserves a name. If the spouts ever break through it may look like Medusa. rofl

I agree! I don't remember doing anything this fun in science class!

I was starting to wonder the same thing. I may give it another week and then maybe give it a little "help". Wink

Kew-el!!
I have this image of you poking it with a pin and the tomato deflates instantly...or worse it explodes! affraid

You do realize that once the skin is broken it will exude that lovely rotten tomato smell...you may want to put it outside before then!!

This reminds me of the mold project my daughter did for the science fair years ago. She made it to regionals. I learned a lot about food mold and was very proud of her...but very glad when it was over!

I really think you should assist in the birth of these infant tomato plants... be the Tomato Midwife !! Just get a scalpel and make a few tiny tiny slits next to poked out spots so they can escape... Laughing

I think I'd ask the CSA for my money back.

What a Face

Then again, you could sell it on eBay. I bet it would fetch something. Very Happy

And that thought about Monsanto maybe having something to do with it is downright scary. affraid

I read somewhere that tomatoes need to decompose so that the seeds become viable.

Nothing to worry about cyclops .

Oooo, can't wait to see it grow a bit. Are you going to pot up the spouts? At least one or two to see what you get.

I'd have to figure out how to do that without killing them. I imagine I would have to cut the tomato so I could get the sprouts out without disturbing the roots too much.

I bet if you chuck it into the compost pile it will take care of itself... Wink

My Mother has actually been trying to convince me to just plant the whole tomato in some Mel's Mix and see what happens. I'm not sure that would work. Laughing

Oh it would work. Just don't know how many little sprouts you would get. But not yet, I want to see the medusa look.

Re: What's wrong with this tomato??

Post  ModernDayBetty on 6/2/2011, 2:55 pm

Thank you thank you thank you for keeping us posted on this tomato adventure! I keep anticipating these updates. :o) I was actually wondering also if you could just planted the whole thing directly into some good o'MM if it would work. I would let a few more pop out first, after adding them I'd put a few red wigglers in there with it to help with the composting issues. I would assume they'd only be interested in the decomposing tomato and not the seedlings?

I kind of want to try this.... I'm wondering what I'd have to do to see if I could get one of my future tomatoes to do this. I'm thinking waiting for one to be extra ripe on the vine then setting it in a window seal for germination. Hmmm

I'm loving Medusa!!
