Hi Everyone, NW FL Panhandle (Emerald Coast) Checking In!

Post  vjam5555 on 5/17/2011, 7:36 pm

Hi, I have been lurking for a few weeks, and actually posted a couple of things but never did introduce myself properly. My moniker here is Vjam, and while originally from Philadelphia, PA, I'm now replanted and flourishing here on the Emerald Coast. I've gotta admit, though, it's harder to garden down here, what with the HOT sun and sporadic rain, so I'm trying the SFG method to see if I can get more than a handful of grape tomatoes this year...LITERALLY, I got FIVE little tomatoes for all of my effort last year. Bummer. I am hedging my bets on SFG, though, and am trying two other mediums...straw bale and enriched soil (1/2 MM & 1/2 potting soil) just so I can compare my results.

MOST of my garden, though, is the SFG mix. I'm pretty much going by the book here, and most of the farm is betting on it, LOL!

TTFN! Just wanted to stop lurking and start being a participant!

and nice to meet you Vjamm,

Enjoy the Emerald Coast, I have family farther down the coast in Dunedin and Largo. They garden also, but not SFG.
We have several members in various parts of FL so you will have help available.

There is no problem with comparing various methods of gardening, but to give it a fair chance, you need to keep the SFG true to Mel's methods. Have you read the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book that was first published in 2006? The information is so clearly written and the concepts are very simple.

Enjoy your garden, be prepared to water copiously during the dry season and remember you cannot overwater your MM, because it drains so well.

Again, Welcome and we are glad to have you join us.

glad your here Vjam,
I too recommend the book, there is good advice here but nothing replaces Mel's "All New Square Foot Gardening". I know what you'er talking about with the heat I even gave some of my plants an extra drink yesterday afternoon. Can you post some pics of your garden? What has been the hardest thing for you to get used to? For me it was the huge insects affraid .
