I have a friend

Post  WolfHeart on 5/20/2011, 12:09 pm

Last summer my wife caught a praying mantis and brought it home to show our sons. we would catch flying insects and creepy crawlies for it to snack on. We were going to let it free in a few days but low and behold SHE laid an egg case! affraid So we held on to it for the winter in our shed. We did all this prior to considering ever having a garden.

Yesterday while taking my afternoon constitutional through the gardens I noticed a small little bugger on my pepper plant and I was ready to swoop in and remove the unwanted pest when i realized what it was. a baby praying mantis!!!! What a Face What a Face What a Face

about a week ago my wife remembered that we had this case

And so we thought lets put it out and see if anything happens and as I have said it did this is our new friend and hopefully s/he will stick around fro the summer Very Happy

It will be interesting to see if the bugs are less in this garden compared to the other.

Hope everyone has a great growing season.

Adorable! Praying mantis is one of my favourites, if fact they are what made me interested in nature as a kid.

I used to collect them, take care of them, and feed them insects. They come in brown and green. Females are larger with big abdomen and males are smaller / slender.

It will take your little one, a month or so before it is large enough to tell if it is a boy or a girl. They are fabulous at eating all the the buggy pests in our gardens.

Enjoy your little friend. There may be others around, many probably hathed from the egg case.

Give them directions to my place as an extra bit of pest insurance.

frogbabe, I assume mantises eat aphids when they are small? Or, do they just tackle the big bugs straight out of the shoot?

How nice to have more troops patroling your garden. A friend for Sheldon perhaps.
