My first SFG! With added full enclosure! Video

Post  Front Royal Foodie on 5/22/2011, 8:28 am

I'm a SFG newbie and I'm thrilled to have found this forum! I had 2 - 8'x4' raised boxes built 6 or 7 years back in which I grew tons of tomatoes in one and tons of herbs in the other - year after year - didn't think we could grow much more because of the deer population. Anyway, we ended up renting out our house for 3 years but when we moved back home I immediately knew I wanted to turn my beds into SFGs to grow a large variety of veggies. So I purchased the SFG book, replaced the old soil with Mel's mix and started planting my beds. Oh I also recently built frames on top of the beds as protective enclosures from deer and other critters - they have deer & bird netting plus removable plastic covers. Here's a video of my garden enclosures with netting & plastic panels in place. This is the last video so far of the series of 5 videos I posted on youtube - by frontroyalfoodie

It was a lot of work but well worth it - we've been having lots of rain and I was able to protect my young plants but I often wonder what it'll be like when the plants take off and grow full size. I did find a cool video of a guy the trims the bottom leaves of zucchini and summer squash plants as he harvest creating taller and contained looking plants. I'll post it below, it's a long video but well worth watching 'till the end where he shows how to trim.

Front Royal Foodie

Very glad to have you join us. I have family in the Front Royal Area, actually a nephew in Winchester and my brother lived in Linden for several years then in Strasburg. More down in the valley in Mt Jackson and Woodstock. From Northern VA originally, but have since lived in Nebraska and now in Oregon. Miss VA bunches but am happy here.

I really like the structure over your SFGs. Should protect you from the deer which are a major nuisance there and here too.

Please keep us updated on your progress and continue to share videos or photos.

Again, Welcome.
