reposting question about bird netting

Post  dixie on 5/26/2011, 12:14 am

Guess what? When you are reading a post and click on "new topic" you are posting a new topic in that section (as in general discussion, recipes, or whatever. I posted this originally in recipes LOL.)

We have a good sized roll of screen from a recent screened porch project and was wondering if I could fix a hoop house of sorts to cover my blackberries. Since the screen is fine mesh, would it provide too much shade for them to get ripe? Has anyone tried this? They have finished blooming and have set on berries, so I don't have to worry
about pollination. Some are turning red, so I need to get busy.

Dixie, are you covering the blackberries as protection from birds or other fruit robbers?

I have never used window screening in my garden, but it does seem like it would shade the plants.

Of course, here in the PNW, we don't need to shade anything.

Yes, as protection from the birds. I hadn't thought about it, but it would keep the wasps and hornets out too. They are really bad on my pears & ruin a lot of my harvest. Of course, I couldn't cover the pear tree because it is too big.
