Alvin, Theodore, Simon, Chip and Dale!

Post  oxmyx1 on 5/27/2011, 9:07 pm

I know they're cute and can sing but they are NOT friends of my tomatoes! I don't want to kill the little wantons even though they totally consumed two of my just planted tomatoes down to a STUB. Any suggestions for 'thwartation'??? The only things I can think of are a hardware cloth cage (I have yet to build - and in which case these plant predators just may send in their skinny CHILDREN...) or insect netting.

ANyone's advice most welcome!

I am struggling with my little guy, Murphy (for Murphy's Law), too. Whatever you choose, it may need a lid on it. Those guys can climb in, too.

I would contemplate my favorite security method......6pack and BB gun.....if I wasn't worried about my neighbors complaining about me drinking in the mornings. Cool

Well... when the neighbor bends over to pick up the newspaper in the morning....

Have you seen the real Chip and Dale playing? Chasing each other in circles around a tree? They look just like the cartoon. Oh...wait...

Being that my real name, well street name, is Chip....yeah, I've seen them. But, usually it involves me chasing a squirrel around a tree. I just can't catch Dale for the life of me. Although, my little brother earned the nickname Dale from the local smartaleks thinking they were original. And, I caught HIM every time I wanted to....lol.

Give them something that they like better than your veggies. I found a corn cob holder at Petsmart, and keep it filled with that or google "squirrel corn logs". They last longer.

A birdfeeder should do the trick too.

Edited to add: of course, put that squirrel food away from your veggies.

I feed the squirrels corn in my front yard, and they stay out of my gardens in the back yard.

Apparently, I'm of a one track mind. Didn't think to tempt them elsewhere! Duh! GB - I play farmville too...

We have lots of chipmunks and they seem to leave my garden alone. We put a little 2 foot high (approx) fence up around the garden made of chicken wire and held up with those metal posts with hooks on them (don't know the exact name, but they are used on metal fences alot and I got them at the farm store).

Good luck!

I know some people put out dog and cat hair to repel rabbits, maybe that would work.

Chipmunks are not cute, they're destructive. Just rats in fancy coats. They don't even wait for a strawberry to turn red....they eat 'em green!

I've had good luck so far with liberal sprinkles of Cayenne Pepper all over everything. Its a hoot to watch the squirrels get a snootful of that !! I buy the big restaurant sized canisters at Sam's Club and reapply about every other day when they are being destructive.

I've always thought that Chip and Dale were the guys that roudy women went to see when they needed to get out of the house. Sorry I could not resist.

I am so glad someone else thought that and posted it!! I was going to but decided against it. Thought I have hi-jacked enough threads with my crazy way of thinking.

Boffer in a thong? Nah, much sexier with a spade in one hand and a tomato plant in the other.
