Can't Believe Myself Sometimes....

Post  zingercan on 5/29/2011, 1:21 pm

I joined SFG site and have been reading the info. I keep reading responses that say "check your cooperative extension" program...................well, a month ago, thanks to my friend, I became a 4H leader -- today I googled "northumberland county cooperative extension program"....guess what came up ........
:?: ?!?!?!?!? :?:

The extension I am part of for 4H.........DUH DUH DUH --- BIG LIGHT BULB MOMENT!

Then I just realized my two years of 'gardening' or attempts at......I've been wondering how people know what to grow in my area.....I've just been looking on the back of seed-packets - if I like the pictures, I plant them and hope they grow!! lol! Oh the inocence of my brain.......and they let me operate machinery, use sharp objects!!

Welcome to my nutty world!

Okay,,,,,,PUT THE SCISSORS DOWN before you put your eye out! LOL! Now, Welcome to the forum! It is great to have you here!

You crack me up but I meet people like you every day at the paint store where I work. They are professional painters but still don't know how to read the instructions on the side of a paint can. All the information they need is there, but do they read it? NO! They just go ahead and try putting on three coats of red in a day and wonder why it doesn't work. No wonder they say the hardest thing for a painter is Grade 3.

Actually, Embarassed I have to admit that I tend to buy seeds because I like the look of them too, even if I KNOW they won't do well in my area. Then I have to figure out a way to baby them along and see what happens but that is all part of gardening. It works well with my rebellious tendencies too. But breaking gardening rules doesn't land me in jail the way breaking other laws would so it is a good outlet for my habit of always pushing the boundaries.

Congrats on being a 4-H leader. What kind of club is yours? I always wanted to be in the farm club.....but lived in town so had to be in the Homemakers part. Can you say BORING?

At least I'm not alone in this little 'Wacky World' of my own........

My friends children have been involved with 4H for a number of years. The leader has some health issues; and wasn't interested in doing anything. On a whim, my friend & I decided to start a club mainly so her kids could finish; her daughter is off to college in the fall; and her son has 2 more years to be involved. All the kids from the old group followed us; except for 2. We're done more activities & community service in the past month than the old group did in 6 months.

We work from the 4H project lists (everything from garden/tie dye/rocketry/photos etc.) and then do our own little things in between. They take their projects to "Round Up" in July; to earn ribbons and money. So it's not like a 'farming group' or 'home-makers group." It's all combined and each group choses what they want to do.

Next year I want to have a grasp on this gardening issue; so we can make each member a SFG and have them plant/raise their own stuff; while we supervise!

Now that's a worthwhile 4H project for todays urbanized living.

4H and 4' square. winning combo

That would be fantastic! I hope that works out for you. I find it so exciting to teach people about gardening and doing things to maintain and increase their independence.
