Re: Need to Build a bin

I have seven 4x4s ready to go but not having the wherewithall to fill them, I am using them as two compost bins, 3 high and 4 high.

Next year I will fill another couple of beds and still have room to store all the leaves I sweep up in the fall.

I have a 3 bin cinder block set-up. It works well and the bins are 3x3 with the fronts open, though something could be put up to keep the compost from spilling out too much. If it was out in the open, I'd consider planting pumpkin, cucumber, winter squash, or flowering vines (morning glory or passion flower) in the compost to grow over the edge as a green screen. You could even put a 1x? box all the way around the outside and let pole beans, summer squash, zucchini, indeterminate tomatoes, etc grow up to hide it. Personally, I think the neighbors will be more jealous about your SFG efforts than offended. Very Happy

I built a composter very similar to this one..

http://www.thegoodrumfamily.com/index.html?/compost_tumbler/

I used rivets to secure the hinges and hasps..

I went with 1/2" steel rod.

And i could not get a free 55 Gal drum from car wash .. so bought one from craigslist for 25$

I have been looking at making one myself. I just googled build compost bin, clicked images. You can find one you like. A lot of them look the same and not very attractive but there are a couple of nice ones. You can also do a video search there are some pretty awesome ones there too. Here's the two I liked that are attractive and made out of wood:

Army soldier. Do you currently have a SFG? Hope so and hope you had a chance to read ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING, it is a great book that gives simple instructions on a great method of gardening. (edited because in another post you mentioned getting ready to buy the book)

That is a good tutorial you found to build the tumbling composter. Looks fairly straightforward, but I really like the tips, especially about adding the second spacer to avoid the bolts snaggin on your uprights.

I'm not really knowledgeable about strength of materials, but it seems the compost could get very heavy, so a stronger rod like you used makes sense.

Again, Welcome and please keep us updated on your progress. Let us know how we can help too.

I got the SFG book and read the new SFG first... now I am reading his initial book.

I like the look of the composter I built, and after a month or two I will build the second one, hopefully I do not need to make too many changes 8-).

I hope to be building my first SFG soon, so I can enjoy maybe one summer crop and a fall crop.

If all goes well, after spring crop next year I hope to expand to my full grand plan of a SFG oasis. 8-)

So glad you received your books. ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING is a marvelous improvement over the orignal SFG method, but the original book has helpful information not included in the newer book.

Hope you and the fiance have a great first SFG season. Then add away until you have your oasis completed.
