Beds put in Today March 3

Post  Trina and Doug on 3/3/2010, 10:29 pm

2x10, 4x4, 4x4, 2x3, Wall on North side of 2x10 and 2x3 Central Arkansas
My first shot at gardening since I hated it as a kid. As part of our effort to eat better
my wife and I decided to grow some of our own food. I'm excited and here's day one's construction

Practice Posting Thread

It looks like the practice page is a good idea. I cut off the two 4x4 beds on the right. I couldn't figure out how not to cut off the picture. I shall return.

WoW! I love the placement. Right out the back door and easily viewed from the deck! Perfect.

Good growing to you....may you grow in love as passionately as you once hated gardening.

I'm also in Central AR. Built my 1st beds last year. Can't wait to get going this year, but have to wait for this absurdly crazy weather to pass! Started some seed indoor today. I have a question for you. Do you have a problem with fire ants? They took over my bed last year. I was mislead to believe that they would leave/die over the winter (WRONG!), bought some stuff at Coop last wknd but haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Fire Ants

Post  GloriaG on 3/31/2010, 6:08 pm

Fire Ants are a terrible problem in central TX. The do NOT go away over winter - just go deeper into the ground.
Their tunnels can extend UNDERGROUND like a web, all over the yard.

We treat with AMDRO. A general broadcast over the entire yard in the spring and spot treatment every time we find a mound. (I know it's not organic - but it really does get rid of them) IF you keep up with it, you can eventually move them out of the immediate area. But it does take a lot of work.

Unfortunately, people who are allergic can really be hurt by those little guys!

Fortunately we do not have a real issue with fire ants further North here in Tennessee. I did have a tree that died from what seemed to be a ant infestation but they were you more tame standard black ants.

Right now we seem to be getting over run with wasps here. I spent the better part of the day in the yard and did not find any nesting sites but they are out there somewhere.

Glad to hear you don't have a bad fire ant problem.
In Texas they can be severe and people can get really sick if they get lots of stings.
We fight them all the time.
