Slings

I have been reading about using slings on the vertical gardening for things like melons, pumpkins, some squash but no description of them. Does anyone have ideas on this?

Slings

Hi, jaspvs. I'm new to this Forum, but not to square foot gardening. It's been a long time since I grew melons in a SFG, but when I did, I used old, laundered panty hose as a sling. I cut off the hose at the knee and slipped the young fruit (canteloupe) inside the foot section. I tied a nice big knot at the top so I could attach it to a length of rope, which was suspended from the top of the frame. The hose expanded nicely as the fruit matured.

Using the foot of the pantyhose was great becase I didn't have to tie a knot in the bottom. However, if you're considering growing a larger fruit such as watermelon, you could use a wider section of pantyhose and simply knot it at both ends.

Thanks! That helps a lot. I just couldn't imagine how I was supposed to do that.
