Zone notification, please -- zone 11

Post  varmit on 6/13/2011, 9:13 pm

Would it be possible for contributors to include their zone in the topic title area? To begin reading this valuable forum, I'd like to locate topics relating to zone 11. So far I've been unsuccessful. So, my request.

You may want to start with the regional forums. (zone 6B?)

Not sure I understand. Are you suggesting to begin a Zone 11 post? Good idea. Still would enjoy know what area a post is coming from.

A zone 11 thread would be good if you can't find what you need in the "southwest desert" forum. I am on the border between sub zones, so I read all over the place and adjust for myself based on the poster's location as stated under their avatar. I get jealous when I see folks from NC and SC already harvesting stuff I don't even have in bloom yet, then feel better when I realize folks further north are just getting started. My climate isn't as specialized as yours, though, so I can't really offer specific advice; I can just say that the folks here are great and will help if they can.

Look over on the left, under the poster's name. Ususally, their zone is under their location. Well, it used to be. If not, and it concerns you that much, you can look up their location on a zone map and make the call for yourself. I believe the reason zones were taken away was because they have little relevance to a locality. For instance, western Oregon, Baton Rouge, LA, and the outer banks of NC are all in the same hardiness zone, but they all have VERY different climates.

Listing our zones in all of our posts would be more labor-intensive than most of us are willing to be. In most of the topics, zones are not terribly relevant, either. A squash vine borer is a squash vine borer and blended compost is blended compost pretty much no matter how you look at it. For the specific topics, we have our regional forums set up for things relating more to climatological issues.

Happy Gardening!

I entered my zone under location in the profile section so it shows up under my name. I think it was a suggestion in the profile section. Any one can do it, if they want.

I don't really use my zone for planting veggies. Zones are determined by your lowest temperature in the winter. I don't grow in mid winter so I don't care.

The only thing I would use my zone for is perrennial plants, because some are resistant to cold down to a certain point.

Personaly, my zone indicates my lows, but it is not relevant to my highs which reach only mid 60's to mid 70's in the summer. My highs and first and last frost dates are what affect my growing in the spring, summer and fall.

True, it's under a poster's name if they put it there. However, I think the OP was referring to putting it in the topics so they could scan the topics to see which ones refer to various zones.
