What'd the newbie do wrong?

Post  JOYFUL1014 on 6/13/2011, 11:05 pm

Squash leaves are suffocating my peppers, and broccoli leaves shaded out my peas! Otherwise, it's beautiful, and all our visitors are totally impressed (as are we!) Should I have planted the squash and zukes on corners and pruned two interior sides? But what about the broccoli? Thanks!

Companion planting is, in my opinion, really cool, and fairly complicated. I think all you need to do is come up with a plan on paper for what is going to get how tall how quickly. Some things like to be cool - for instance, lettuce will like growing in the shade of taller things. Most squashes take up a lot of room

Can you tell us a little bit more about your garden? And did you check out Mel's chart of how many plants per square for different vegetables?

And, oh, yeah, where have my manners gone?

Edited to add: what I said above isn't actually companion planting - but I'm tired and can't come up with the right words.

Heh. We made some similar missteps this year. Our collards and cauliflower have huge leaves and they are not shy about snuffing out neighboring squares. Will look for more compact varieties and better planning for neighbors next year.
