I read an article that recommended planting horseradish in a long length of stovepipe to contain the roots.

And bury it deep! I had horseradish in my yard before I moved in. Had NO idea what it was! I now have horseradish in small areas through out the yard that I have to keep at to slooowly remove where I don't want it!

That look beautiful!! I used pineapple sage last night for the first time. I roasted a whole chicken in the grill, like beer car style minus the beer can, I bought a contraption. I put lemon juice on the bottom thing and cut up some shallots for it. I was minimal on other herbs wanting to find out what the sage would taste like so all I used was olive oil with a little bit of garlic salt and celery seed and then added a handful of sage leaves. I was kind of surprised how well it turned out. It was sooo tasty!! I'm so glad I planted some pineapple sage this year, one of my new favorites! I think it might taste great with a little bit of honey too. Yum yum.

Thanks for the tip on the horseradish! I'm going to put a pot under the mels mix and even in the ground and then plant and cover it with mels mix, and I'll keep a very close eye on it.

I like the cinnamon basil to put in muffins, I'll have to try something with the pineapple sage too.

Why can't I see Josh's pix? All I see is a 4- or more line list of URL numbers and when I click on them, nothng happens.

I am sure that gardening like Josh is like learning to walk, but instead of one step at a time, it's one square at a time.

SFG Herb of the year Garden

Post  sherryeo on 6/25/2011, 2:34 pm

I'm sure to a large extent that's absolutely right, FV. But Josh is so young and I'm so ... well... NOT YOUNG. I'm relatively new to the forum, so I don't know how long Josh has been gardening, but I think he just has some inherent, creative talent for being able to see how a garden can be made not only productive, but also so attractive and interesting to look at. I just think he is a remarkable young man and, as evidenced by the Josh/Boffer carrot contest thread, he's got a very good sense of humor, too!

That looks fantastic!
My lemon balm died off in the winter cold and I am not too sad about that. It smells lovely but isn't terribly useful...don't all shout at once Laughing

Update on the herb garden

Post  Josh on 9/19/2011, 5:43 pm

Here's the update on the herb garden, it now has all 21 herbs of the year in it and that's not all, it has been certified as an official Illinois herb of the year garden by the Illinois Herb Association.
All the herbs grew great in Mel's mix and have been easy to keep control of their spreading.
