Soltice ha! sunny sunny sunny
My Dad used to plant by the moon. He would plant the potatoes on March 17, in the middle of the d... night!!

Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature! We did not have spring yet. Summer has been here since winter. temp 103 today with no rain in sight. I wish winter would hurry up, for we prob. won't have any fall either.

Most depressing day of my year. From here on out the days only get shorter. I love spring and summer, so this day only reminds me that the cycle is starting in the other direction again. Sad

Aww, poor BYBG! I'm full of hugs today, it is my 36th wedding anniversary. When I was still young and hot I thought I was stupid for choosing the shortest night of the year to get married. Now that I am a crone it seems like a good idea.

The good news is that by July 4th the kidd-o's do not need to wait so long for twilight to see the show. (and it should start getting warmer too!) Summer doesn't really start until July 5th or more likely, July 17th in the PNW so we just dance with our shadows whenever they grace us with their presence!

Cheer up BYBG, the night hawks should start singing soon! Such a pretty twilight song, who could stay sad?
Debs....who nearly stepped on a night hawk coming down a mountain trail late one night. They have great camo but the distraction was the beautiful sunset on the shoulder of Mt Pilchuck across the valley from where I was walking that Solstice Eve.

Two days ago I looked up my first frost date to start mapping out my planting for fall/winter crops. I have to start planting the day after the Fourth of July.... Now that gets you depressed.... I've loved everything about gardening until I started counting down the weeks to frost..... Oh but right now the birds are singing and the sun is shinning at it's suppose to reach the 90's, so lets sing and dance!

BYBG, I feelthe same and just the reverse when it is the shortest day of the year.

We just have to carpe diem (or something like that).

Or live in the moment.

I agree 100%...I just didn't say. When people are complaining about the shortest day of the year, I celebrate big time because winter is on the downhill side. Things can only go up.

Too bad things actually lag 30-60 days because the day lengths change slowly until around the equinoxes. But, the bottom line is we are past the peak of daylight now and things are moving the other direction. This whole thing started when I was a kid and would play golf until dark. After the 21st/22nd of June, I kept coming home sooner and sooner. And, THAT is what bummed me out. After June, the sun gods started eating into my most treasured time of day........playing golf at sunset.

The newspaper today said today marks the end of the 3rd coldest spring on record here. Sad I feel so behind the growing curve. I sure hope the summer actually arrives.

I agree too. Carpe diem and that. I get a sense of finality on the longest day, from there it starts to wind up to Lammas and harvesting. I always get an urge to start stockpiling food for winter then. I start celebrating on the shortest day because the day length starts increasing. January is no fun but a bit of sun and lambs start to appear in Feb after Imbolc and my gardening year starts again.

Happy Summer Solstice Northern Hemisphere people! It is Winter Solstice here in NZ and I still can't get used to the reverse seasons - keep thinking it is nearly Christmas but it's not! And I've been here 5 years. It never feels like Christmas in the Summer time and you can't see the Christmas lights until about 11pm! I am looking forward to the days getting longer again though, at the moment I go to work and come home in the dark and don't get to see my garden Sad

Also happy anniversary Lavendar Debs, it is my parents' 31st wedding anniversary - they had 25 years of anniversaries on the longest day and are now aiming for 25 years on the shortest day Smile

Kahrani, at least you had an Emperor Penguin show up on your southern beach. They said she kept swimming and swimming....2000 miles! I bet she doesn't have any desire to swim back home. And, her poor husband is back there in -30° weather fighting the wind with that egg on his feet. Reminds me of a country song....

Well theres gone for good and theres good and gone
and theres gone with the long before it
I wish she'd been just a little more clear
well theres gone for the day and gone for the night
and gone for the rest of your dogone life
is it whiskey night or just a couple beers
I mean what kind of gone are we talkin bout here

I love that song!

I was looking at the moon, thinking that a full moon on summer solstice has a special name. Found this:
