HELP central NJ

I live in central NJ....can anyone help me locate a distributor for the coarse vermiculite and the peat and compost...I need more than for a 4x4 garden....we are doing more of them for a cash garden... but my yard is muddy, and clay all over, so I may need some more vermiculite than just the little bags they sell at the nearby co-op and lowe's. The Schundler Company in Edison sells vermiculite I think still, but don't know if they sell to just plain folk. If anyone knows the best place to get the 'Mel's mix' supplies in these parts please let me know. We have some compost going but this year we will need to buy more than what we have. Thanks Susan.

They are located in Cranbury. I called them and they said they primarily ship it, but are set up to sell to customers at their warehouse as well. I haven't picked it up yet (maybe Monday or Tuesday) so I can't tell you what it looks like in person. If you want I will post a pic of it once I get it. Peat and compost should be fairly easy to find at your local garden supply.

have you tried calling all your local garden supply stores? i'm in ohio so not able to help you locally (although i used to live in nj, exit 151 on parkway a long while ago)

i have found the best price for my area on coarse vermiculite at one of the SMALLEST lawn and garden supply centers - which surprised me immensely.

also, inquire in lowe's in the insulation department some of the larger stores may carry it there.

and pool supply stores as well use vermiculite.

Hey Neighbor!

I have that same wonderful clay soil in Watchung. Last year I followed the old SFG directions and dug a trench for my tomato plants. After a few rainy days, the trench filled up and would not drain for weeks. I might as well have planted them in a swimming pool! TG for raised beds. I've got my Mel's Mix in now and they hold/shed just the right amount of water.

There are a handful of places around Central NJ for bulk vermiculite. FYI, though, the listing for W H Milikowski in Piscataway is inaccurate since they closed shop on March 30. Good luck with you SFG!

One 4 cubic sq ft of Grade 4 Coarse Vermiculite is $23.00
I ordered 2 bags.
Shipping charge was $15.00

The order came in a few days.

Hello from Hunterdon County - I picked up my vermiculite from Agway in Raritan. $24.99 per 4 cuft bag. You can check out www.agway.com to see if there is a location close to you.

We were fortunate to get a starter supply of vermiculite from our neighbor who runs a garden nursery but the amount I need to convert all my garden area to Mel's mix would have depleted his own needs. The Uline warehouse is just a few miles south of here; I've contacted them to see if they'll let us pick up rather than have it shipped.
