I did it, and so did someone else

Post  Lancelot on 6/26/2011, 9:03 am

Just started SFG this year, got myself set-up and things are going great so far. I had many problems to deal with in the past, shade, tree roots, and persistent weeds. The plants are growing beautifully, the area looks great, and I mentioned it to someone at church last week and they got excited. So excited that they came to see our set-up that night and decided they wanted it too.

My wife went with her friend to pick up materials the next day. Wednesday night we put together boxes and mixed the mix, even in pouring rain. By Saturday the whole garden was planted and it looks just great, just unbelievable what this method can do for a person. A neighbor to these people said their garden got flooded out last week, but the SFG garden is high and damp, not wet.

Thanks so much for having this idea, and for making it so easy for us.

to SFG and the forum!!! Please let us know what we can do to help, and we so love pictures!!! We also have regional forums to help on a more "local" basis, but most of us hang out in more than just the one we live in so you don't have to stick to just one!

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, raised beds certainly keep the rain from flooding the crops. My first year the neighbors lost their gardens to the deluge of rain we had for several days. Mine survived and I had a great harvest.
It also helps the soil warm up sooner in the spring so you can get things planted earlier.
There's lots of good to be said for SFG. Love it.

Don't forget to post pictures. We love pictures.

Lancelot, It is fun spreading the word. Just by having my garden out front 2 of my neighbors are going to start SFG's of their own. I am glad you found us.

Lacelot.

Isn't it marvelous that with your first post you have already recruited another SFG?

Today I invited a couple of young neighbours passing by to look at my efforts. From the road no one can see what I am up to unless they are about ten feet tall as my yard is several feet higher than the roadway. They were very surprised at what they found and asked all sorts of questions. I was able to share some lettuce and kale. What's the betting they might try it in the future?
