New to SFG - Boston MA (Z6a)

Post  SwampCatNana on 6/28/2011, 9:39 pm

I live in the Boston area and will be getting a community garden plot either later this summer or next summer. They have a waiting list of which there are 6 people before me. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed it is sooner rather than later.
I'm a "new to gardening, again" gardener. Meaning I have gardened all my life but have been away from gardening for about 11 years; living in apartments with no access to a garden.
I'm hoping to have some friends here who can help me reacquaint me with my gardening knowledge.

No, I haven't. That's only because I just learned about it tonight. I had the original sooooo many many years ago! lol
Will try to get it this weekend. Can't wait to get started. I love SFGing!
Since I have arthritis(lumbar region) I may even raise my boxes a bit more. Or, I could make seating of some kind for each.
Thanks for the welcome.

I'm a bit tired right now and didn't really register about you living so close by. Checked your profile and see that you also enjoy stain glass work!!!!!!
I had to give it up back in the '90s but, have decided to get back to it recently. I need to resupply myself with the equipment and checked the prices......good grief! I cannot believe a grinder I paid $30.00 for in the late '80s is now about $180.00! Outrageous! I haven't had the nerve to check glass prices yet.

Welcome aboard. Reading the new, updated book will shed a lot of light on what you may be reading and finding different. A lot of it makes sense, and a lot of us have switched over. Some of us still keep stuff on the side from older days because there is just so much invested in either method. However, I think you will find the new methods even more efficient when compared.

Look forward to having you around. There are lots of very experienced people here that love to help.

If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. And, remember a picture is worth 1000 words, too.

Hope to see you around more!

Welcome SwampCat,
I hope you get your boxes going soon. There's nothing better than digging your hands in the dirt and growing your own foods.

I live in Maine so our weather isn't too different but our starting dates might be.
I'm in zone 5a and love that in New England, you can start cool crops in the summer for late fall harvesting.

Enjoy.

Thank you for the welcome! I look forward to digging into that dirt! I just hope it will be at least late summer instead of having to wait until next summer.
