What should I do with caterpillars?

Post  jkahn2eb on 6/29/2011, 12:15 pm

My broccoli leaves were half eaten overnight!

I had gone out to pick basil for pizzas we were making and was putting basil on the tasty dishes when I felt something crawling on my leg. Please don't be a black widow or brown recluse I thought. Looked down and I saw green. Thought it was a praying mantis which I've seen in my garden but it was a caterpillar.

After sticking the pizzas in the oven, I rinsed the tomato sauce can and went out to collect caterpillars.. if I found 'em. Pulled about a dozen (including three babies). Should I feed them to my fish or put them in the front yard to be eaten by birds?

I put the only one I found in a clear container with some radish leaves.... it's cocooned in only 2 days... but it's been like that forever now. I think it depends on what kind of caterpilliar it is. I think mine is a cabbage moth so I didn't want it making more babies in my garden after it became a moth.
