POLL: What region are you in?

Post  sherryeo on 7/6/2011, 10:42 am

Proud to say I'm from the Coastal and Tropical South!!! Come on C&T members, stand up and be counted!!! Our region has some unique challenges with hot, humid weather and an abundance of bad insects that make our gardening more of a challenge than lots of other places. So be recognized for your determination to sfg under sometimes adverse conditions! Cast you vote! bounce

Lower and Tropical South!

Post  littlejo on 7/6/2011, 11:50 am

Everyone goes in a zone by zipcode. But, as of yet, my garden has recieved zero mail!

I am in 8A, Lower South, but, I'm on the edge, so have to garden sometimes with a Tropical twist. My garden is under a tree, so gets a lot of shade. Tomatoes, cukes, and okra and melons are all that get full sun.

Northern CA and Coastal Valleys...

Post  PNG_Grandma on 7/6/2011, 12:13 pm

We're in the Central Valley but fall into the huge area of Northern California, including the Coastal Valleys...not entirely true to what we are, but we get the benefits of the Delta breezes almost daily. They bring the cooler, moist air to offset some of our 100+ degree days. Our Mediterranean-type climate allows us to grow just about everything, just about all year round. We are blessed!

Can I vote 3 times? Smile I'm assisting my son in the lower south, I'm middle south or lower south depending on who you ask (extension agent says 8A - zip code says 7B), and I'm offering assistance to extended family in the Philippines.

what region?

Post  JC Moses on 7/6/2011, 10:43 pm

I looked at a map and Virginia is one of those states that can be in one of several regions, depending on your source. Northern-most of the southern region? Southern-most of the lower north? How about @ 2500' elev in the mountains, southern exposure? sunny

I am in zone 6A, in St Louis MO. I don't know how many of us are on the board. I know BBG is in STL but haven't actually run across anyone else.

Happy gardening!

Ahhh we flat landers in the fly over country are just comparatively more recreationally and socially challenged than most of the country, it’s doubtful we are just sitting here re stuffing the ballot box.

Nah, the midwest region has been full of blabbermouths since the very first day the forum started! Razz

Just kidding. It appears that there have been more members from the midwest that join and participate, than from any other region. Could it be the climate that encourages more gardening? You guys get four seasons for sure, but not the extremes? I realize your region has zones from four to eight...nah, westie might be right, the terrain is so flat and boring, or full of skeeters, or rolling hills after rolling hills that never have a surprise on the other side when you crest one...there's nothing else to do! tongue

I thought about the farming aspect, and that is likely the case. I just thought we had more balance around here.

I agree your winter example is extreme. I was thinking more along the line of FarmerVal and others who have to quit gardening in the summer because of the extreme heat.

What's really interesting to me is that you have 60%+ more heat in the summer growing season than I do, as does QuiltBea in Maine. I can only dream about having enough heat in the summer to grow tomatoes and peppers every year.
