Chickens are funny!

Post  Aub on 7/7/2011, 10:43 pm

This is Mrs. Feather-Bottom. She is taking a nice little dirt bath in some leftover MM. She lay in there for quite a long while, she must have been really comfy!

Actually, no boys here. But Tinkerbell had her bath before Mrs. Feather-Bottom got in, so I bet she had her fill of eating dirt.

I think it would be pretty comfy to wiggle around in too. But I think I'll let the girls have the fun.

It worked Aub. I love chickens. I would like to raise some, but I'm afraid of being tied down with the responsibility. What kind are those?

I love chickens too. Already have guineas. I bought 22 chicks about 2 months ago. One died. They all look like mini chickens now and I love spending time with them in the chicken coop. Before I throw their feed to the ground, I let them eat from my hand. After I throw the feed down to the ground, I pet them all. They flock to my feet and peck my sandles and orange toe nails. Chickens love loose soil. So do guineas. I think it cools them off==just a guess cause I never see them fluffing in the soil during the winter.

Tinkerbell and Mrs. Feather-Bottom are Silver Laced Wyandottes. Buffy is a Buff Orpington. And Nugget and Kevin are Partridge Silkies. (Mrs. Feather-Bottom is missing from this picture)

Good idea getting several different breeds. We have six Plymouth Barred Rocks, and can only distinguish one to call by her name. We should have had their legs banded so we could tell who is who!

Carolyn, we bought 30 chicks in April, we have lost 6 to date. We had something go through the flock about 2 weeks ago and thought we might lose them all, but we put some of the antibiotics we bought when we bought them in their water for 3 days, cleaned out the coop, and kept an eye on them. Also read that scratch should not be given (nor too much corn) in the heat because it warms their body, it's more of a cool weather treat. Right now my chickens (they are no longer making chick peeps, but chicken noises) are feasting daily on squash bugs that we pick and take to them. Also I saw that putting Apple Cider Vinegar, about 1 Tbsp or so in the 3 gal waterer we have, will keep bacteria down, I've noticed that when I check on them in the afternoon, their water is not as cloudy, still has dirt and other things in it, even though it's elevated, but it does look clearer. Tractor Supply's website, tractorsupply.com, has a few videos that were great learning videos, but mostly I hang out at backyardchickens.com. I want one of their shirts that says "My pet makes my breakfast", with a chicken on it!!!

Valarie. I like the sound of that t-shirt. I haven't seen it at our tractor supply. Hit and miss.
I am still feeding my chicks chick starter but this is their last bag. They have a great coop. They have a 12x12 running pen and a 16 x16 barn stall with a 10 hen laying box waiting to be used. . One of the chicks died 2 days after I brought them home. No losses since then. When I brought them home, I kept them on a heat lamp and gradually lowered the heat until they started growing their own feathers. Also gave them electrolytes. They did great. I lay a few boards down in the coop and crickets hide under the board. A few days a week, I lift the boards one at a time and watch the chickens fight for crickets. That is really fun to watch. After the 1st board, the chickens are watching the next board and waiting for me to lift it. They are really smart chickens. (my nick name is Cricket and has been since i was 2wks old ) When we are working around the yard==huge yard===we take the chickens worms and grasshoppers. I haven't seen very many squash bugs this year.

Edit= P.S. The Guineas must be eating all the squash bugs====good birdie

Easy fix: Give them all the same name. You'll never have to wonder again.

Aub, I forgot to mention I enjoyed your video!!! I've just been so busy with my garden in full bloom and full of squash bugs, and then coming in and putting up what we brought in. Toss in the fact my husband brought home 80+ ears of corn for me to put up (ours did not make) and I'm just exhausted.

Carolyn, the t-shirts and bumper stickers are at backyardchickens.com. I was told not to feed my chickens layer feed until they are at least 20 weeks, are yours layers?

I turned my chickens out yesterday, there is just no breeze on the bottom of the inside of the coop, it's all open except for one side, but the bottom half is tin. Some of them did not want to go out, but I chased them all out, I guess I should have got some pictures. We occasionally catch a criket, but they love grasshoppers (which are harder to catch) even more. I had planned on resting yesterday and gettting some regional posts for the Lower South done, but ended up clearing out some stacked wood sitting in where we want to put a yard for the chickens, all I need do now is build the fence for it, add 2 gates and they can run all day.

That's a really cute video. I really wish I could have some chickens to lay eggs. We go through a lot of eggs around my house. Unfortunately, our township says no (unless you have 5 acres). Needless to say, I don't. Sad

It's so weird the township would require 5 acres. Chickens don't need 5 acres. Maybe it's for a space bubble, but your house could be on 5 acres yet 100 ft. from the next house... Amazing the prejudice against chickens.

Sounds like you may need to have a discussion with your town selectmen cor city counselor. That seems like a rule that would be good to change. :!:

That's actually a new ordinance this year. Before that, it was absolutely NOT! Progress comes in baby steps.

I had a guy down the street (middle of tract homes). It was fine, then he added a rooster.

Do you know how loud a rooster is all day long? Louder than my spouse talking to me and it was a 1/2 mile away.
