New in Bellflower

Post  notagreenthumbedgal on 7/14/2011, 6:04 pm

Hi! As my user name states, I'm not a green-thumbed-gal, but I'm giving it a shot. Last year's harvest included 2 lima beans, 2 radishes and two tomatoes: 1 from a new plant from seed and 1 from the previous year's tomato plant that just wouldn't die! A few years prior we were buried in zucchini and tomatoes. I think our changed landscape and the neigbor's new shady tree contributed to the lack of success in the vegetable area lately. So I'm trying SFG this year - and the neighbor trimmed the branches from our side of the fence. Very Happy

Mixed results so far: I started with seedlings that were transplanted into my 4X4 planter; everything except 1 spinach and 2 carrots died - immediately. So I bought some "established" plants. So far they are looking pretty good! Can't wait to see how it goes.

Anyway, that's me. I'm probably going to be asking LOTS of questions as I go along. Thanks in advance!

New in Bellflower

Post  sherryeo on 7/14/2011, 7:32 pm

Welcome, notagreenthumbedgal! I think you'll love the forum and sfgardening! There are lots of super nice folks on here who are always willing to help with questions, problems and concerns. And they also love sharing in fellow gardeners' victories and successes. I hope you'll post often and post pics when you're able - everybody just loves seeing what other gardeners are doing.

We all learn from each other and have fun with it, too. I hope you'll check out your regional forum, too, especially when you have questions specific for your region - it's a great place to get help from those who know how to garden in your area. I hope to see you around the forum!

Hey! My grandma lived in Bellflower! I haven't seen it in 25 years, but it used to be such a cute little neighborhood! You know that big furniture store right by the freeway? My mom used to date the original owner's son! I have ties back there a long way.

Great gardening spot, too! Welcome!

Small world -- hardly anyone I come across (even in SoCal) even knows about Bellflower! The place has changed - a lot. Not necessarily for the better, but the city is really trying to turn that around. And yes, great soil!!

My GREAT grandmother lived in Bellflower. I haven't been back there since she died in 1997. One of my aunts taught school there until recently.

Welcome!

Grew up in Bellflower :-)

Post  thefarmerandadele on 7/28/2011, 10:53 am

Welcome! This is my first post on this forum - just joined today and thought I'd look around to see if I could find others in SoCal. Bellflower caught my eye! I lived in Bellflower as a young child for several years in the early 60's - my father worked at the JCP store that used to be on Bellflower Blvd. I used to walk to the PB Carroll's store (alone!) to spend my allowance, and I think I remember something about a Cole's market too?

Anyway, I'm living in La Mirada now and we've got out first SQG going this summer and I'm loving it! Best of luck on your gardening efforts, and I hope to learn something here too!

From another newbie: Welcome!

I'm in Torrance, and my wife's grew up in Downey, not to far from y'all in Bellflower and La Mirada! Glad to see other So Cal folks! All this chatter about "frost" just doesn't compute for me! Laughing
