Just picked.. and ate... my first ever home grown ear of corn!

Post  itsablondething on 7/16/2011, 8:26 am

And it was sweet and wonderful and delicious!!! Truely one of the best ears I've ever eaten. I picked sugar enhanced variety, and am really pleased with it!

Last year I tried 4 plants to a square, and my harvest was ... zero.

This year, spaced the planting out a bit more. The block I planted on May 15th has done really really well. I planted 2 more blocks 2 weeks later... one block doing ok (maybe half the plants will produce ears of corn) and the 3rd block.. none at all.

At any rate, my corn harvest will be way larger than last year. My guess is a dozen to a dozen and a half ears. Not huge, but better than none!

Next year, expecially since I hate chewing corn off the cob, and cook it and cut if off anyway before I eat it, I think I will try planting it all at once, spaced as I have it this year.. and then just prepare it for the freezer.

If I could get it to three dozen, I would think that was awesome for the space that I have.

Nice job itsablondething! Laughing

I was going to try to plant some corn but I really don't have the room since I planted so many other veg's...haha..so I gave my corn seeds to the contractor that put siding on our house.

Apparently he has a huge house and yard for gardening. I told him he has to give me some corn in exchange for the seeds! I hope he does.

Anyway, keep on gardening....
