SFG keeps me going in the garden

Post  teamhillbilly on 7/21/2011, 7:20 am

Hummm I'm not the best writer to start with,I type with one finger rising a garden has become my rehab, after three strokes I started looking for a way to rise a few Tomatoe's Shocked ,now that I'm wheel chair bound my 50x50 garden has reduced to a couple of 4x4x6's inside of a greenhouse,so I'm trying to learn Mel's SFG, I had read about a few times, now I see he has a new updated book out,I give my copy to my new D-I-L, who is rising garden in a few containers on back patio,Very Happy ,If the heat in Texas doesn't get me we'll have to learn this together,I'm not new to the garden but I'm new to SFGing.some even call me a Master Gargener.Cool I'm just another old fart try to make ends meet.bounce

Teamhillbilly

Great way to rehab, in my opinion. A greenhouse with a couple of 4 X 4 gardens is great, you would be amazed at what you can grow in that small amount of space.

I see you lent your DIL the old book, have you had a chance to read the new book yet? Mel's Mix is the greatest.

Are your 4 X 4 ' s on the ground or are they table top height? I use Table tops due to mobility issues. Here is a great thread TABLE TOPS

Again, Welcome and keep us piosted on your progress.

Teamhillbilly,

Welcome, Welcome to the Forum -

SFG Gardening is the best and great for rehab since is not so time consuming and hard as row gardening.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Hello and welcome teamhillbilly, I have been useing SFG as a part of my 5-way heart bypass recovery. I have just one 6'x4' table top at this point but plan on adding an 8'x4' table top this fall. It really is amazing just how much one can grow in such a small space and with only 6" of growing medium. I too started with the org. SFG method and was a bit sceptical at first that one can grow in such shallow "soil". Wow am I a believer now. I would read the new book cover to cover before you start building. Some of us get so excited we get ahead of ourselves and have to redo some things. Me included:oops: If you can do table tops I really recommend them. Whatever you do we would love to see some pics if possible. Can't wait to hear how you are coming along.

Thanks!! I used 3/4 inch plywood for the bottom of my boxes. 4 of my boxes are 2 years old and are holding up great.
