Hi Dorothy - What did you use to make those shades?
I have been looking for an inexpensive way to shade my lettuce. Your shades remind me of car window shades and I happen to have some that we no longer use in the car. This has given me the idea to use those. Did you do the same, or are those specially made for gardening?

I love your gravel paths, and love that you post pictures of your garden at different stages - this way I know what to expect as my veggies grow!

Hi, When I put in new transplants I try to protect them until established. Yes, those are car window shades that I found at the 99cent store. I use 3 or 4 dowels and fasten the shade to each dowel with a large thumb tack. If you want to shade to a whole 4 x 4 box then use Mel's suggestion of covering the box with two 1/2 inch PVC (I thing they are 10 ft.) in the crossover method. Then lay sun shade over the top and fasten to the dowels so it won't blow off. If you go back and look at my blog (late 2008 or early 2009) you can see some examples of shading. I don't like the covered wagon method as well as it was always falling over.
