crook neck yellow squash

Post  HouseofWool on 7/25/2011, 4:37 pm

I planted this variety for the first time and am baffled as to when to pick it. I read estimates of 6-8". I assume that this is from the edge of the stem to the blossom end. Which leaves a very small neck and a bulb that is approximately 3" in diameter. (I am sure that I am over-thinking this!)

Thoughts?

houseofwool,

I really prefer my summer squash very small and with tender skin, so usually pick them at 6 to 8 inches. I really don't want the bulby end over 3 inches.

And the more you pick, the more fruit will probably set.

Pick one now and then when you have another one the same size, leave it to grow 2 days more and see how you like that one. your palate will give you the clue.
