New in SoCal, La Mirada

Hi! I am a first time SQG in La Mirada, CA and we're enjoying some moderate success this summer so far - along with some puzzling setbacks. But overall it's been a terrific experience and I am hooked! We moved (back) here after many years overseas and are renting a house. It already had a nice raised bed in the backyard in a great location for growing veggies. My husband did the hard work of making Mel's mix, grids to lay on top of the beds and various supports, and I've had the joy of choosing what to plant and tending to it.

We've been eating tomatoes, pole beans, bush beans, eggplant, lettuce, cucumber, beets, a few peppers, basil, parsley and radishes so far. Had a couple of zucchinis - but they are not doing so great. The eggplants have far out-produced the zucchini, and until this summer, I'd never eaten eggplant in my life. Glad we planted them - but I was hoping for more zucchini!

I'm looking at things now and wondering how to transition to a Fall/Winter garden. Bought Pat Welsh's Southern California Organic Gardening book for some ideas as to the transition process. Hope to learn a lot on this site as well!

Sounds like we need to meet up for a veg exchange. My eggplant hasn't produced anything, but we're overrun with zucchini! LOL!

But truth be told, I'm not even doing SFG yet. I dug out rows and planted a bunch of stuff in April. I only learned about SFG about a month ago. I have since set up my 4x4, but there's nothing in it yet. Baby steps...
