C&T South Aug. Update

Post  shannon1 on 8/9/2011, 6:00 am

Since most of our region is currently experiencing a moderate to extreme drought according to the Plamer Drought Index, I thought I would give a few water conversation tips. We square footers are already ahead of the game but there are some things we can do to be even better.

The simplest thing is to water either early in the morning or in the evening. This minimizes the water lost to evaporation. Another way to limit evaporation is to mulch your garden. Drip and soaker hoses are a great way to save water as well. Soaker hoses are damaged by UV light so if using them it is best to put them under mulch as well.

Finaly rain barrels are one of the best ways to coserve water. I know it is not raining much but as an example of how little rain it takes from 1 inch of rain falling on a 1,000 sf roof one could collect 600 gal. water. Naturaly you need much less to fill a 55 gal barrel.

Happy Gardening and please don't over do it out in the heat this month.

Shannon, thank you for the tips! I haven't been around much lately, but I just wanted to let you know that I think you're doing a wonderful job as CTS Host.

Now if only I could convince Housing to allow me to have a rain barrel. I just barely got by with the compost tumbler my Dad gave me for Mothers Day. So many rules...
