vegetable plant growing like crazy from compost!

Post  athiede on 8/9/2011, 10:28 am

I will send a pic later, but have a long green vine growing from our compost with little yellow flowers. Unfortunately, it is not in a good place as it's putting out little 'catchers' to grab onto and into shrubs close by. I'm wondering if it is squash or cantelope. The leaves and main vine are prickly and rough. Any idea what we're dealing with and any ideas how to contain it? It sure is happy in spite of the 100+ weather because it's in the shade half of the day at least.

Without a photo I will have to speculate it may be a cucumber. It will grow, make fruit and then the vine will die and your shrubs will be back to normal. I love the little compost volunteers. Very Happy

If it is a cucumber you could use a trellis for it to grow on. You can use a trellis even if it isn't a cucumber. Squash, melons and pumpkins will all grow up a trellis. My cucs and pumpkin are over 6 ft tall and still growing up their trellis.

Cucumber sounds like what I would guess, too. Mine has fuzzy/prickly leaves and lots of yellow flowers. Almost bristly.

You can train that vine to do just about whatever you want. Trellises and poles would lead it away from your shrubs. You can allow it to go vertical, with support, or lead it away and let it crawl from there. Sky's the limit. It really comes down to what you want it to do for your yard.

Neat surprise, though!
